Re: To tongue or not to tongue
Thanks a million for all your replies; all very helpful comments guys. I probably should have specified I'm talking about flute not whistle. Obviously tounging whistle is pretty much essential. I guess I'll try to work on my fingure articulation and throat articulation. If I can get it clean with th...

Re: Double cuts
If you are willing to pay a very modest subscription fee you can check out Blayne Chastain's online course for flute and whistle. He does a lot of excellent demonstration videos where he breaks down all of the various ornaments and techniques. Well worth it. He's a great teacher and his treatment o...

To tongue or not to tongue
Hi Fluters, Just looking for some advice (as usual). Playing the Jig Coleman's Cross, there are several repeated 2nd octave Es and Ds just in the first 4 measures alone. Now, I'm learning this tune from Shannon Heaton's First 50 set. In the book she mentions tongueing some and cutting others. This w...

Double cuts
Has anybody got links to a video showing exercises or clear examples for double cuts and cranns? Struggling a bit to get these techniques down.
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Finger Vibrato exercises.
That seems odd. Agreed. More natural, too. And again. Yeah, I understand where JCortese is coming from with the rotation idea, I play piano too and it does help there. That said, the flute is another instrument and the guys whose styles I admire most on flute, whistle and uillean pipes seem to just...

Re: Finger Vibrato exercises.
That Conor Byrne video is great. Thanks for posting it. That's exactly the technique I mean. I guess it just takes time and a lot of finger wiggling practice. As for the rotation technique, that's interesting. I'll try to incorporate that. It may be difficult using the pinky finger as an anchor poin...

Re: Finger Vibrato exercises.
I offer this in the spirit of FWIW, as I'm still not entirely at home with finger vibrato. I practice by deciding how many finger strikes I will use, e.g. three is typical. Then I do them slowly, then faster. Maybe worth noting that it's nowhere written that one must use vibrato at all, so if you a...

Finger Vibrato exercises.
Does anybody do any specific exercises to improve finger vibrato speed? I'm left handed but play right handed which is fine most of the time. I play piano so my right hand is fairly nimble. However, when doing finger vibrato on slow airs, particularly with my weaker right hand, I don't yet have the ...

2nd octave flute.
Hi, I've been playing flute fo around a 15/16 months. I practice quite a lot and am fairly happy with my progress. I play a Garry Somers Pratten which I like. My current problem is my 2nd octave tone is sometimes a little hard and reedy, especially when playing at faster tempos. I play long tones an...

Re: How to strengthen Low D
Thanks guys. I am working on long tones in the low register every day and it is helping a lot with my tone in general including hardening the D. Thanks for all the (mainly) positive comments. My flute is a G Somers Pratten and I don't believe in can't!

Re: Sean Nós recommended listening
Thanks a lot for all the suggestions. I only mentioned Sean Nós in the original post to give an overall indication of what I was looking for. I'm out this weekend but look forward to doing some intensive listening sessions next week. You've been really generous with your knowledge guys. Thank you so...
