Re: Almond Oil
You can also get almond oil with vitamin E already added, which are typically the types of oil intended for skin care. These are definitely better than the type intended for cooking.

Re: Somers Flute?
It looks like Michael Cronnolly is still making his M&E polymer flutes. They're inexpensive, patterned after Rudalls, and I find them responsive and easy to play. https://www.mandeirishflutes.ie/ I have both an M&E and a Somers, they're both great but given Garry's situation M&E might be...

Re: Flute making Apprentices
FWIW, since the initial creation of this thread the Ballyfermot College of Further Education now has a traditional music performance course with an instrument-making strand, which when I last checked had the option of flute-making. If you've got a couple years to spare... https://www.bcfe.ie/courses...

Camping for Catskills
For the first time since I've heard of the Catskills week, I'm going to be free for that whole week. Unfortunately, I just found that out recently, and it seems my options for affordable lodging are limited. Has anyone tried tent camping? There are the "Official" sites for $25 a month, or ...

FS: Sam Murray 5-Keyed Flute (D) (eBay)
https://www.ebay.com/itm/143252359858 Hello All, I've listed my Sam Murray 5-keyed flute on eBay. To quote my listing: " It's a great player and has served me well as my "daily driver" for many years. The only reason I'm selling is that I moved over to an 8-keyed flute, and this one d...

Another update: If you're on the fence but are going to be going to the St. Louis Tionol this weekend, I'll have it with me and you can get a chance to play it.

Re: Trad Pubs in Dublin
I'll second those suggestions, also there's a new place that's opened up recently called Piper's Corner, not too far from those places on the North side of the Liffey. It was opened by piper Seán Potts and I believe there's music every night. Great beer selection too!

Re: YACQ (Yet Another CITES Question): Private Sales
Yes, I certainly wouldn't want to risk intentionally mislabeling it. There's ignorance of the rules and there's actively attempting to skirt them... I have a feeling that, in the latter case, the relevant authorities would give me far less consideration before chucking the instrument into the incine...

YACQ (Yet Another CITES Question): Private Sales
Hello, Apologies in advance, I know the CITES thing has been done to death... I've asked around and searched the forums, and all the info I'm finding seems to pertain to dealers or makers selling to individuals across international borders. I'm wondering if anyone has successfully navigated the proc...

Re: FS: Sam Murray 5-Key Flute (D)
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1dsPjcPzPGWgMoVN8SpPYt4xbaFVi2ilf/view?usp=sharing I've added a hi-res photo here in an attempt to show the exact size and nature of the crack, but fortunately, even here the crack is exceedingly difficult to see. It starts at the slide end of the joint and is roughly...

FS: Sam Murray 5-Key Flute (D)
Hey Folks, I'm selling my 5-Keyed Sam Murray flute in D that I bought off another chiffer several years ago. It's a great player, but it doesn't get as much playtime these days as I've a new 8-key as my daily driver. Keys: Cnat, B-flat, G-Sharp, Long-F, D-Sharp (So basically, all the usual keys on a...

Re: How much for a Boosey Pratten and is it worth it?
In my opinion, it would make more sense to work with a good maker to get the type of flute you want rather than hunting down an available Boosey in playable condition. Additionally, this gives you a flute optimized for modern ensembles rather than having to work around the tuning foibles that can be...

The Short F: Is it worth it?
Hello All. A number of years ago I finally purchased my primary instrument: A 5-keyed Sam Murray with all the usual suspects except the short F. There are times when I wish there was a short F for one reason or another, as in certain passages requiring F naturals it would seem to make sense, but I'v...
