Re: Suddenly in the market for a flute by Christmas...

Get a Copley or a Burns. I have owned both as well as an Olwell. My Olwell is a gorgeous, wonderful instrument that I dearly love but it was somewhere just shy of 2k. The Delrin Copley I travel with is nearly as good for only 360 new I think. you could play either a burns or a copley your whole life...

Re: Quiet playing Flute ?? Is there one..

With a good embouchure, any flute can be played quietly. I think you should look at a Burns folk flute. They can be pretty loud if you want but it's probably better suited to playing sweetly and quietly than the Copley. However, my Copley plays sweetly and quietly quite well so your mileage may vary.

Re: Which type of flute do you play.

You can't limit yourself to just one.

I play:
A Jupiter dimedici Bohm flute
An Olwell pratten keyless
A delrin keyless Copley
And a 5 key Martin freres f flute

I love them all.

Re: A wooden flute maintenance question

I would echo what everyone here has said and would not leave a wood flute assembled all day routinely. Additionally, it's important if you have cork lapping on a synthetic instrument. Leaving a cork lapped tenon assembled causes the cork to compress prematurely requiring service much sooner.

Re: Boehm Flute Question: Plateau keys v open-hole keys

I would concentrate less on plateau vs French keys and more on the lightness of the action. A very good action is a wonderful thing and facilitates more musicality than the sort of key you have. I prefer French keys for no reason than I learned to play with French keys much the same way I prefer an ...

Re: Top-end Flutes?

however I would say there are differences in quality even if they become smaller and smaller towards the higher end. I think most here would agree, there is a much bigger difference between a Pakistani flute-shaped-object and a Copley than there is between a Copley and an Olwell! This is the eterna...

Re: Cheap non-Pakistani flutes on ebay

I would like to give a full throated recommendation for a Copley and Boegly Flute. I just purchased a delrin one with no rings new for 360 so that I could have a travel flute. It is quite uncomfortably close to as good as my Olwell given how little I paid for it and how much I paid for the Olwell. I...

Re: Slides on the Boehm flute?

It's pretty hard to do even with french keys. slowly letting the key up is the best way I have found and I have french keys.

Re: buying a low-priced Irish flute

I second the recommendation for a burns. There are other great flutes in that price range I'm sure but I've only got experience with the folk flute and I can tell you, it is a great instrument. I would still be playing mine quite happily if I hadn't gotten an Olwell.

Re: Dangling Left Thumb Exercise for Flute - Video demonstra

Being primarily a modern flute player, I was unaware of this style of hold. I have had trouble with left hand cramps. Thank you, I will try this. The "Rockstro Hold" is pretty long-term mainstream, Scott, though by no means the only method advocated within classical Böhm circles. For clar...

I have heard those were a fair bit better than the injection molded ones that came later (maybe from you come to think of it.....) I've not had a chance to try though.

Re: Has anyone seen, heard or played one of these?

I can see stepping on it, It is almost certainly 3d printed. Which is really not the most effective way to do it, though it is neato. The best way would be an RTV Silicone mold and to cast in poly resin. If you can cut a chanter in half by splitting rather than sawing you can make two molds that are...

Re: CP: Whorfin Woods January

By way of a plug, I bought #110 and it is precisely as advertised and lovely. I've been playing with it a week and a half now and taken it to 2 sessions. The volume is assertive but not overwhelming for a medium sized session. The sound is a nice happy medium between a really dirty trad sound and so...
