Re: Aaron O'Hagan

Gorgeous pipes. I hope more talented pipemakers show up like this to help soften the demand. Maybe in a few years waiting lists on top-tier and extremely talented makers will be down to only a few months.

Re: Tips for Musicality

Just to clarify: music is not merely reproducing strings of notes. It's about putting structure on the notes, phrasing, emphasis, beat and pulse, recognising the internal rhythms, colouring certain notes, all that stuff. What I find intensely interesting is the myriad ways trad. musicians express m...

Re: Tips for Musicality

I thank everybody kindly for the replies. I've taken a lot of what you have said into account the last couple days and the advice has honestly helped me navigate my instrument that much more. I am well aware that I am yet a beginner on this instrument - but in my view tackling musical problems in wh...

Tips for Musicality

Hello Everybody - Been learning for the past 7 months or so on my practice set, and am expecting a full set this coming April. I'm a bit frustrated as of late because I feel like I've hit a momentary plateau with my playing. Allow me to elaborate: 1) I know roughly 20 tunes - about 8 jigs, 8 reels, ...

Re: Vintage Piper Recommendations

Thanks much to the both of you! I'll be spending a few hours tonight sampling a few of these pipers. I wish iTunes had more of a selection - though I understand why they don't.

Re: Vintage Piper Recommendations

Thanks Gumby! Will definitely do that. Anyone to add in to my current list then of Seamus Ennis, Willie Clancy, and Johnny Doran? I know there are more out there I just don't have the names at my fingers.

Vintage Piper Recommendations

Hey All - I'm trying to further my education and listen to some pipers that one might call the "Masters" of our tradition. The only catch is - I have absolutely no idea where to start. I'm aware of folks like Seamus Ennis, Willie Clancy, Johnny Doran - but other than that I don't even know...

Re: Sightreading and piping

OK! I will keep that in mind, no MIDI! :P EDIT: WOW! Epiphany! I think I found the problem, I just need to set my mindset to learning mode! When I listen to the tune I often get carried away or something. Download slowdown software too. And listen to it on repeat. Enough to where you could hum the ...

Re: Sightreading and piping

If I'm particularly invested in a tune where I'm not sure how it should be played, I usually 'sketch' it out with the sheet music. Exploring it a little bit, and then find a recording on YouTube to hear how it might sound full fleshed out. I usually will listen to his recording over and over again u...

Re: Sightreading and piping

I am sort of picking up a tune from thesession. My biggest trouble is adding my own embellishments/improvising too soon. Yes I agree, I think listening to "plain" recordings will help. Trying to learn tunes From someone like Ennis, will be quite difficult, due to their heavily embellished...

Re: Sightreading and piping

I actually started out sight reading. In the Highland Pipe tradition all learning is done by paper. Their system is so regimented one can generally be sure they're getting the 'feel' of the time because every ornamentation is included on the paper. The only exception might be Strathspeys. The first ...

Re: Are the pipes your primary instrument?

I played Saxophone throughout Middleschool and Highschool, and started playing Highland Pipes when I was 16. A year later I discovered my heart was always with the Uilleann Pipes, but I was too far gone into GHB at that point with no Uilleann teachers in my area. I just stuck with it and played the ...

Re: Pipes & Apple Music

Don't know if this is on Apple Music, though I do know he's on iTunes: Sean McCarthy He plays at a nice, lively pace - but never quite pushes into "too fast" territory. I can always tell what the tune is. Also people may not agree with me here, but I find Eoin Dillon's stuff pretty easy li...

Favorite Session Instrument

So this is a fun question: What is the instrument that you enjoy the most when present at a session? Doesn't even have to be anything unique. Maybe there's a particular sound not heard often that really punches in when played well, or maybe there's a more ubiquitous instrument that you would sorely ...
