Re: Oiling old recorders
It depends on the wood type and also how/if the wood was treated before being turned into a recorder. Often makers like Moeck and Mollenhauer impregnate woods like Maple and Pear with paraffin wax. These pretreated wood don't require oiling (supposedly). For other woods or untreated maple or pearwoo...

Re: Repurposing some Clarinet Wood into Flute Wood
My man in the USA has delivered! I just (very promptly) received my box of 10 x upper joint blanks, 10 x lower joint blanks and 5 x milled bells. The quality of this wood is very nice. The lower joints (3 bumps) are not equal in dimensions as mentioned above. 6 of mine are 9.85" (250mm)...

Re: Repurposing some Clarinet Wood into Flute Wood
Thanks to an extremely helpful US C&F member for coming to this Antipodean's aid and forwarding to me a good supply of these 'bumpy' Blackwood tubes and bells.
SciPlus seem to report that they are now out of stock (temporarily?).
Looking forward to working with this fine wood

Re: Finished my First Wood Flute!
Thanks for the kind words. Will - you raise a valid point about the tuning of this flute and its true 'Renaissance flute' status. To clarify this is really a copy of a Terry McGee copy of the C. Rafi tenor flute found in the Musée des Instruments de Musique, Brussels (no. 1066): http://carmentis.kmk...

Finished my First Wood Flute!
After lots of bamboo, PVC and a few aluminum flutes I started making wooden flutes about 3 months ago. Finally today, after re-learning woodturning, much trial and error with technique, tools and woods I finished my first G flute in Jarrah and brass. It's a Renaissance flute (based in part o...

Modern clarinet pads are usually white leather or 'skin': http://musicmedic.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/small_image/400x/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/t/h/thinpressedclarinetpad_1.gif Sometimes brown or black or other: http://musicmedic.com/media/wysiwyg/StaticPageGraphics/squaregroupclarin...

Re: Sourcing for flute repair parts?
These are clarinet pads you're using? Or something else? Try http://www.musicmedic.com They do single pads in thick, medium and thin. And other options. Also try http://www.instrumentclinicusa.com They also do single pads in many styles and thicknesses. Both of the above offer excellent quality and ...

Re: Rudall Carte & Co. Radcliff Model - buy it now?
Thank you, Tonehole for your kind comments. Patience and keeping a tab on every tiny detail is essential I feel. Since I started my DIY woodwind repair on saxophones I think the few flutes (and clarinets) I've restored seem so uncomplicated and orderly by comparision! With saxes there are a few doze...

Re: Flute Bore Diameter vs. Sounding Length
Yes, my approach (I'm slowly finding) is similar. First thing I did was imitate my favourite (cylindrical) flute. A beautiful Rafi copy I have in A=392. Then I made many rough prototypes and then tried different pitches - all in different materials. Finally I'm working now in wood. Jarrah, Gidgee an...

Re: Flute Bore Diameter vs. Sounding Length
Thanks for posting these observations Casey. Certainly food for thought. I've started making cylindrical bore wood Renaissance flutes (some C, D and G flutes so far). I was surprised at the differences in expected/calculated SL between 18mm bore flute and 15mm. However, I know that cylindrical flute...
