Mack Hoover Updates
Hello everyone! Has anybody recently heard from whistle maker Mack Hoover? His whistles are among my favorites in the collection. I just found out that he retired last year, and has passed the torch to a whistle maker named Elizabeth. Now his design is manufactured under the MackBeth whistle brand i...

Re: poll: Low F whistle on cheaper end of scale
You could also check out the standard series PVC low F from Nick Metcalf . It is very light blowing, and plays almost like a high whistle. It sounds soft, pure, and well balanced. Don't expect it to play loudly though. They run for just around $80 from https://www.theirishwhistle.com/ I have a sound...

Re: Chuck Tilbury IRISH FLUTES (Not just whistles)
Abaration , the G has a very easy second octave for a cylindrical bore flute. No need for renaissance fingering or much lipping up to get good intonation at the upper half of the second octave; just good embochure control. The low D is alright, but I find that the second octave B, A and C# start to...

Re: Chuck Tilbury IRISH FLUTES (Not just whistles)
They were also sold by Celtic Cross Whistle Shop before they closed (I assume, since the website no longer exists). As far as I know, Melody Wind is the only store that sells them online at the moment. According to Geoffrey, the owner of Melody Wind, Mr. Tilbury also sold them locally at music festi...

Chuck Tilbury IRISH FLUTES (Not just whistles)
Have any of you had any experience with the Tilbury PVC flutes in D and G? I'm surprised they aren't as popular as their whistles, considering the low cost and reliable playability. The search function here tells me that the flute hasn't been talked about on Chiff & Fipple yet. The intonation is...

Re: PVC: Tipple flute vs. Mark Foster flute?
I don't have a Mark Foster, but I do have a Tipple. I suppose the Tipple would have a more reliable second octave because of the Fajardo wedge. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think Mark Foster Flutes have a uniform cylindrical bore throughout. The second octave will be progressively flatter as you ...

Re: Two-part versus three-part Tony Dixon low D?
I don’t have a three piece, but according to discussions I’ve been in I’v heard that it is a sweeter whistle than the two piece. The second octave is easier to play but the first octave is quieter (some say weak, but to those who prefer a gentler whistle it’s a good thing). I believe it is a result ...

Re: Shearwater Bass
I'm very happy with mine! :D I have a recent one, bought just this year; a bass A. It's the most affordable alloy bass A on the market. It takes just a little more air than a low D. Likely less than you would expect. The finger stretch isn't too bad. I'm only 5'5", but I don't feel any strain. ...

Re: WTB: Mountain Ocarina in C
I have found one in Polycarbonate! Thanks!
I am still open to an aluminum and a warmstone/corian option if any of you happen to have one.

WTB: Mountain Ocarina in C DONE

I already have a hardwood one, but I'm looking for something more durable. I'm also open to options made of aluminum or corian/warm stone . The item m...

Re: Mass produced whistles: if it ain't broken, why fix it?
That is true Mr. Gumby. The forums do not speak for the many musicians out there. It's just that in my country, there are only two other people who I know of who seriously play ITM on whistles (sadly, but I am trying to raise awareness!). Hence, the forums are one of my main social outlets to hear f...
