Re: mic technique?
I'll second the suggestion above that experimentation will be needed. For anecdotal info, I use a Shure SM57 and record with the mic about 6-12 inches away from the whistle and pointed just below the fipple to avoid too much "air/wind noise."

I think this is worth repeating. You'll get a different timbre with different microphones.Sedi wrote:A lot also depends on the technical aspect, the mic, the sound system, etc.

Re: Our instruments are endangered !!
Legislation won't help. Too many people, it can only get worse. Happy whistling! This right here. While I'd love to think that we can change our behavior enough to not wreck the place, the simple fact is there are too many of us. Depopulating would solve (or drastically reduce) pretty much every en...

Re: Alba Bass A first impressions
Lowest I've ever gone is a Burke low C, which is about as wide a stretch as my fat stumpy fingers can handle. Assuming you've played one of Burke's low C's, how would you say the stretch compares? I really like the sound of the lower whistles and would love to delve into the deeper realms but fear m...

I would agree that any clipper should work to your satisfaction, regardless of brand.

Seconding Mr. Gumby. Also might want to let us know which "cheapies" you tried already so we've got a reference point.

Re: Can't read it wrong
I have all of these pet peeves and more. My latest annoyance is, for example, "setup" vs. "set up." "Setup" being a noun and "set up" being a verb + adverb. Seems obvious to me, but I still see people saying things like "I need to setup my computer."...

This may just be extra credit at this point, but in Chrome and Firefox a speaker icon will appear on any tab that's making noise. That at least helps you find the offender to shut it up.

Sounds obvious, but listening to the tunes a bunch helps me. I like to be familiar enough with it that I don't need to hear it again or look at the sheet music to know how it should sound.

Re: Clarke Original Tweak or Not to Tweak
I wouldn't call myself a "really good player" by any means but all I did to mine was put a little wax around the wood block to cut down on air leakage. Can't speak to the manufacturer's intentions but I wouldn't say it HAS to be tweaked. It'll play tunes straight out of the box, just as yo...
