Re: Low D suggestions
You can't beat the tapered bore Dixon Low D for price and short finger stretch. It's easy to play, doesn't take much breath, the holes and nicely rounded and reasonably small, it plays comfortably up into the third octave should you wish to go there and has a reasonable tone. It's a great first Low...

Re: Has anyone made a ridiculously large bore whistle for fu
Seems like even if it were possible (which I can't say one way or the other) it would take a ridiculous amount of air.

Are you referring to Music Folk or is there another store I need to know about?ChrisStorz wrote:We have a great shop here in St. Louis--the Webster suburb actually--that sells whistles but I am a lazy sod. Besides, they get enough of my mandolin related money.
Cheers.

Re: Who makes a great Low F whistle?
I'm partial to Burkes so of course I'm going to recommend those, but I feel it's worth mentioning that my Burke low F is my favorite of the lot. It's a little chiffier than the rest (whether they're all like that or mine's just got "personality" I can't say for sure) and plays extremely ea...

Re: Low whistle cleaning
I don't know what's different about me, and admittedly I play low whistle less than high whistles or flute, but still ... I've never cleaned my low whistles and never had a problem with condensation, blocked windways or anything else. I just shake the thing out if it needs it and they seem fine. I ...

Re: Low whistle cleaning
I use the "cloth on a stick" method for cleaning. Seems to work well enough.

Re: Dixon comparisons
As far as entry-level whistles go I think the Dixon's pretty decent. The bell note isn't nearly as strong as I'd prefer (which is why I tend to go for Burkes) but apart from that it plays and sounds better than what I would have expected for the price. I haven't played the older style Dixon you ment...

Re: Bb recommendations
I'm ordering a Tilbury Bb, which is 75 bucks... have yet to see if that is any good. Sounded nice enough on a recording I heard, but of course that is different than having firsthand experience. They sound good in person too. The only complaint I have about mine is that it seems a little too easy t...

Re: Burke Whistle question
I've got a Burke C in brass and it's a lot heavier than the high D or even the Low F (both in aluminum). Sound-wise I don't really notice much difference.

tuned in such a way that it'll play well with other instruments, not just itself ("equal temperament" is the term I think?). Afraid that's a misunderstanding of equal temperament because your need depends on what other instruments. Pianos, keyboards etc. are generally tuned to equal tempe...

Low C recommendations
I know "what whistle should I get" asked of 100 people tends to elicit 100 different answers but I'm hoping this will be specific enough to at least narrow it down a bit. I'm looking for a low C whistle that's tuned in such a way that it'll play well with other instruments, not just itself...

Re: D whistle recommendations
I tend to agree with the above sentiments. Perhaps get them a nice travel case for their whistles; those tend to be a lot less personal. Throw in a case of beer and it's a gift I can fully support.

Re: Burke AL Pro vs. Viper Low D
I've got a Burke ALPRO Low D, and the bottom section (three lowest holes) rotates, not just the lowest hole. The tip is not delrin on that model (as someone mentioned already). Those are the only differences I can tell you for sure as I've not played any of the newer models. Edit: Looks like someone...
