Re: Newbie

If you don't like the taste of aluminum in your mouth you might want to consider a Burke low D. The whistle is aluminum but the mouth piece has Delrin where the whistle meets the mouth. It is also a very nice low D. Thank you, RonKiley. That is good to keep in mind. A low D is definitely in the not...

Re: More TED

This isn't a TED talk, but could well be presented as a humorous scientific spoof on TED. Hope you get a giggle from this: http://www.dhmo.org/facts.html I had a couple of friends, who obviously forgot first year science, going on this for a week. When they twigged on to it, they were eager to pull ...

Re: Newbie

Hi Bryant, I'm hoping that your comment about the Sweetone being easier to play will apply to the O'Brien Rover set in D/C that I ordered from David O'Brien yesterday. Cayden, a forum member, guided me to O'Brien's website; I had no idea that such a gifted whistle maker lived nearby. So far, I have ...

Re: No whistle Youtube thread? Well then!

http://youtu.be/_c9AConcZx0 Paddy Moloney and Sean Potts [ RIP ] start this medley of jigs on 2 whistles, originally recorded on "Chieftains 2" . Thank you, Kenny. That was delightful. Now, you've got me wanting to learn the flute, too...best stick to the whistle for now, eh? :-) Slainte,...

Entertaining, yes. Just don't confuse entertainment with good instructional advice.
Good advice, thank you! :-)

Re: TRAD DAWG

What a lovely new friend you have. I'm glad he's such a help-- as they say: make new friends, but keep the old. We never forget or replace those we have loved and lost, but other friends can be there for us and lessen the pain a bit. I have a friend who believes lost pets specially send us their su...

Re: Beginner

Noted, MT. I was just trying to find a way to keep playing around, experimenting with different grips, breath volume, etc. Can't let a little knick hider playing around. In a few weeks I'll be taking a 3 session series of beginners lessons to set me on the straight and narrow.

Re: Beginner

David, I tried out the piper's grip on the tenor recorder and the C penny whistle. It made a huge difference in getting clear low notes with the recorder. The Piper's Grip has been particularly useful the past 24 hours, after slicing the top of me middle finger - I was aiming for a carrot with a lit...

Thank you, Highland-Piper,u for sharing you experience & knowledge. Like you, I don't like anything metallic in my mouth. I'm sorry to hear that you are no longer playing the whistle, and hope it is because you have found another instrument that you prefer, such as the pipes suggested my your mo...

Re: Newbie

It wasn't until I got home that it became clear that the D is almost unplayable ... The Generation D is prone to sqweaking Actually, it's almost certain that it's you that are prone to squeaking, and the whistle is just fine. The Generation requires good breath control. Come back to it in a while w...

Re: Newbie

You are so right, Highland Piper! I've been watching various YouTube videos and am beginning to realize that to learn which is the "best" it is preferable to actually try several different models out. Unfortunately, the only person I know who even has a low whistle is residing in Alberta -...

Re: Newbie

5 whistles in 1 week. Yikes. That's 0.875 whistles a day. Keep that pace up, in one year you'll have 319.375 whistles. In case you're curious, it will take you 3131.115459882583 years to own a million whistles. I did not take leap years or a direct hit by an asteroid into account. Get moving. And w...

Mute Point, your hiding hound story made me laugh. My guys are so social that they want to be wherever I am, so sometimes I put a children's gate up to keep them in a different room for their own comfort. They also let me know when I've practised piano too long, by putting their heads on my lap. Sam...

Hi Bryant, Welcome to this incredible forum. Like you, I got my whistle [and a couple of recorders for the grandkids last week] and have become a whistleholic. Wonder if there is a support group for those too deeply smitten? :-) Here are some resources that I've gleaned from other postings on C&...

Re: Beginner

Hi Squeeky Elf, That's essentially what I've been doing. I purchased an alto and tenor recorder at the same time as the tin whistle last week. Like you, I've alternated between them, partly to avoid repetition fatigue, which at my age is an issue. Sometimes one can fool the arthritis by alternating ...
