Re: Sharp upper A&B

Not sure how much this will help, but I try to use the least amount of pressure I can get away with for the a and b. Earlier on in my playing I think I was squeezing too hard out of fear of losing the octave, and that may sharpen those notes quite a bit. As you get more comfortable you will find pre...

Re: Plans

Gentlemen, thank you for your feedback. Im looking forward to this project. If this goes well, i may try to make a chanter and reeds. Found that I don't have the wind ,much anymore, to blow my GHB, so this well be a new adventure. Thank you all again.jeff Several very fine pipemakers have told me t...

Re: Seamus Ennis's recordings for "Louie"

I'd heard a few of those tracks before on Forty Years of Irish Piping, but the others are new to me. Wow, really great stuff. Do the Doolin recordings refer to the ones on the Clare Library live recordings site? If not are there sources to get any non-commercially-available tracks?

Re: What is a Rowsome Style Chanter

The tone is full and strong in both octaves, the back D is bright and reedy but not at odds with the rest of the chanter, the vibrato available is warm or nasal depending on the fingering, there's a certain wildness around the C note….. What a great way to describe a chanter  Especially g...

Re: Brian McNamara's idiosyncratic A roll

Just by listening and looking at the video I'd say he is playing the A open with the F# and E (middle and ring) fingers, doing a cut, then a quick succession of two taps, first with the A finger, then with the F# and E fingers. That way you might get a bubbly effect from the first A tap, it would so...

Re: Recording pipes at home - equipment ?

I think I remember someone recommending Michael Joly's "Hulk" 990, which is a modified MXL 990. If the mod is too expensive right now you might consider buying the MXL 990 and having it modded later. I can't speak for it from personal experience though. It's just something I have my eye on...

Re: Question about bass drone slide sections

I thought that mathematically, if you bent a straight pipe into a circular curve the loss in volume from the inner part being compressed is equal to the gain in volume from the outside part being stretched. This is why the formula for the volume of a ring torus is the same as a straight tube that ha...

Re: Back D fingering

Do you all think it is better, when people are taught the whistle as a first instrument, to teach them O XXX XXXX fingering rather than the O OXX XXXX they seem to get taught just incase they take up the pipes? Is there any reason for whistle playing that the C# finger off is better? Is there anyon...

Re: Both my pipes have sharp A's on the first octave.

In my limited experience I've found that the A is a pretty pressure-sensitive note. When I've played someone else's set the A stands out as being off since I was used to the pressure needed on my own chanter to get an in-tune A.

Re: Most difficult tune you've learned

Hmm that's a tough question because it really depends on how you play the tune and what your ornamentation/variation choices are. I'd probably say the Queen of the Fairies but it's more a reed issue than a tune-difficulty issue getting to the d' note. And don't let the slower tempo fool you -- hornp...

Re: Reed problem -- Flat C#

You might also want to check the air-tightness of the reed, by covering the lips with your finger and inhaling through the staple. It should be airtight. I noticed that when my old reed was having the same problem it was leaking a bit through the side edges. Hi Geoff, Unfortunately, I've seen quite ...

Re: The Wheels of the World: 300 Years of Irish Uilleann Pipers

I was just reading about Tommy's book, actually. $68, crikey. It's a large 382 page book, packed with a tutorial, tunes and 130 of his own compositions. In addition there's the stories and memories associated with the tunes, photos etc etc. all of it breathing the spirit and personality of the man....

Re: Reed head speed

Are there any other links to studies on the physics of double reeds? I actually find this really interesting and it could be an asset to reed making when I finally get around to it. I remember finding one or two a while back. I'll do another search today and post what I find here. Edit: I will list...
