Re: Feild trumpet/bugle music outside of signals and calls.
I have been looking at feild trumpet tunes lately due to the scale that play is the same as the scale of an open willow flute. It seems that of the quicksteps I have found tend to only use five or so notes common to the bugle and field trumpet but don't really deviate from that into the upper range...

Re: Small Hands Big Whistle
That's the one indeed! I have one of his keys. Comfortable, well designed & executed, good functionality with the obvious caveats.

Re: Small Hands Big Whistle
You could consider adding a key or two! There is a whistle maker in New Zealand (name escapes me at the moment, but does sell on Ebay) who makes nice & functional plastic keys for low whistles.
They're the sort of things you could make yourself if you're at all handy with basic tools.

Re: how late can you start??
I don't buy the lie that only children can learn a new language or a musical instrument. It's simply not true.
Anyway, well, you can certainly start learning a minute before you die. Won't have much time to practice while you're here, but you can always take it up again later!

Re: Apparently sea shanties are the new viral rage; leverage
Thanks for that! That was a truly wonderful treat! And who would have guessed? 2021, the Year of the Sea Shanty! I am nowhere near skilled enough to participate in anything like that, but that was a pleasure to watch & listen to. Like the Youtube orchestras and other socially isolated musical ga...

Re: The most "chiff" sounding whistle???
Back to the original thread: first, as an organist, I agree with those who define "chiff" as transient harmonics that sound when the tone is initiated. (It's what makes a tracker-action organ special). I liked it on the organ. I like it less on the whistle. I find that the Tony Dixon allo...

This thread might be of interest, regarding the maker if not the whistle itself.

Tune Identification Time!
Since we don't have a Chiff & Fipple Traditional Piano & Comic Dance forum, I figured I might as well ask here in hopes of netting an answer from the broadest group.
So I came across this lovely hornpipe and am wondering by what title(s) it goes by.
Thanks!

Re: Tunes for Animals
Playing whistles to train birds to sing is an old pastime, and actually caused the invention of the smallest playable whistle.

Run with it. People intending to visit Ireland in 2021 and 2022 are advised to ask their tour coordinators to include visits to establishments serving locally prepared chips and fiffle, with genuine Irish home-style taps, cuts and rolls. If you can't get me the fips and chifafa, just bring me a che...

Re: Chip and Fiffle
I have known people to refer to this site as 'chafing nipple'. Has anyone considered the possibility the guys at OAIM are just taking the mickey? :moreevil: I'd thought of that possibility, but the page in question is buried pretty deep. Naturally, I excoriated them for blatant disrespect of Chick ...

Re: Buyer Beware - whistle similarities
And to bring this sad tale to a close, the seller has ended the auction. Hopefully he'll relist and at least get some recompense. If he bought the whistle as a Sindt recently, perhaps he still has recourse through Ebay to get a refund. Another tell: doesn't Mr Sindt sign his whisltes "JS"?...

Re: The most "chiff" sounding whistle???
A simple "yes" would have answered the question adequately :D I'm not sure Wikipedia would appreciate a change in any case, they probably consider their use of the term as correct as you consider it incorrect. Actually, that's the whole point of Wikipedia: someone who actually knows what ...

Re: Introducing: The Fliphead
Hi all! Thx for your replies! Yes, intonation is a topic. I worked a lot on different chamber sizes, chamber designs and tube diameters to come to the final model which is very well in tune. Up to this point I produced way over 250 prototypes in many different materials. About the pricing: Well, it...
