Re: Thumb rules for Irish PA right hand playing?

This is an old discussion, but since it stopped with an open question..... Fingering is a significant part of technique of a "piano" keyboard instrument. There's a reason why pianists practice scales and arpeggios. They help to get thumb crossings smooth, fluent and in time and to provide ...

Re: The "Athenry Whistle" Key of B

I'd read about the Bb conversion, but both by "instinct" and calculation it seemed to me that the hole spacing proportions would change so much I couldn't believe the result would be acceptably in tune. I also liked the idea of the narrower bore, so it seemed preferable go from tube than p...

The "Athenry Whistle" Key of B

St Patrick's Day is coming up shortly and our pub band will be doing our usual gig. "Fields of Athenry" is pretty much a cert, if it's not on the set list it'll be requested. Our singer does it in E and although I mostly play fiddle, I'd like to play whistle on that one. A quick hunt gave ...

Re: Chieftain V-4 low D whistle tour

Hope it's ok to add a contribution. I'm not on the tour, but I have bought a V4. I'd been very intrigued on watching Phil's video presentation and was considering buying one and was reading comments about it online. When I got an email offering V4 "seconds" at a good price, (the "beak...

Re: Anyone got a cure for LWHOAD

Nice style by the Ebay seller of the Sheerwater A - sound interested, throw a few crumbs of knowledge and pluses and minuses around and gently draw bidders in. Just how I aim to do it when selling instruments! :) (Not in any way suggesting that the seller isn't genuine. Hope both seller and buyer wi...

Re: Variations on tunes.

(and significant) variation. You probably need to realise most variation in Irish music is very small, 'microscopic ' is a term I have heard used. To an experienced listener the change of one grace note when playing a repeat can be a variation that has significant impact. But again, the old onion a...

Re: Renewing a cork joint

Straightforward job with a bit of care, as per those instructions.
The blade used for cutting needs to be seriously sharp. I use single sided razor blades off Ebay. They are just sharp enough.

are good for all the supplies in this country.
I use Evostick contact adhesive.

Re: Kerry Optima review

Edit: Just spent some time with the Optima tonight away from home, and got to explore the upper reaches of the 2nd octave-the high A and B are very loud, and not that easy to sound. But like anything else, with practice it gets easier. I won't be playing up there much in my apartment though, this I...

Re: Playing faster, playing perfectly...

I'd suggest turning Boyd's comment around.... Talent is is what makes you stick to Practice, rehearsal, hard work, persistence, method, determination and self-belief. In the oft-quoted German music college study, (can't remember the proper name,) there were no talented geniuses who'd got brilliant w...

Re: Fintan Vallely New edition of Learning the Irish Flute

Website now says launch is in November at the same venue in Dublin. No other explanation.

This gets tedious. Bad as ordering a flute from some notorious makers!

Re: Punnish nicknames for tunes

Bogman said "Jig of Slugs" - I've heard more often "Jar of Slugs."

"The Waltz of Liz Carroll" can puzzle or amuse people when it turns out to be a jig.

I'm too new here and far too bashful to mention the other name for Banish Misfortune!
