Re: Curiosity: Loudest wooden flute
I might be able to fit the order? I make the Elaphone.. a flared fipple flute, that I believe to have the advantage when it comes to volume. It is actually the characteristic that I believe to be worth the fact that this design does sacrifice some of the second octave. The flared tube works to direc...

Re: Need suggestions for flute to play at renaissance festival
Have you every heard of an Elaphone?
That's what I make.. from all recycled woods.
They are tuned to play well with other instruments, but I usually tune them to minor key.
That allows for playability of the relative major, but you'd have to reset your motor memory.

Re: shipping flutes in cold weather
It depends on how well seasoned the wood is.. I have been dealing with unheated wood shops for fifteen years, and anything made from unseasoned, or for any reason unevenly moist woods, will be greatly effected as they pass below the freezing point. This is because water expands as it freezes, so as ...

Re: WTB Low F Whistle
Hi all, I'm on the look out for a good Low F whistle. Tunable ideally, but non-tunable also considered if the whistle is fully in tune. US seller preferred as the exchange rate from dollars to pounds/euros is pants!! Cheers Phil I have a good selection of Elaphones in the key of F minor. I also hav...

Re: Are you a musician?
I have found ways to focus by visualizing certain things. Sort of visual totems. I guess it occupies the portion of my brain that might otherwise become distracted in a performance. Really weird that -- I keep myself from becoming distracted by purposefully thinking of something besides the task at...

Re: Are you a musician?
To bring the subject back..... since I appreciate debates on the intangables, as they are ripe with knowledge of different perceptions, and that grants those with an open mind, a broader view of the universal truth. Music is an expression through vibrations, much like another language. It expresses ...

Re: This or That? A beginner's question.
I think you should back up and ask what people would recommend in a low D.. You might find there are flute makers on the forums (I am one) that have low Whistles in stock, and don't advertise much online. What I make is likely to be out of your price range, since my D's start at $180, because they a...

Re: The Great and Awesome Flute Youtube Thread
Regardless of how good it did (or did not) sound, it's still not a flute. Leaving aside the fact that it's merely blatant promotion for something you're trying to sell on ebay... Okay .. it's an add .. at least for the next two hours.. then it turns into a link to a flute that sold on ebay.. .. the...

I was just looking at some nice looking chromatic flutes made by Daniel Bingamon.. he just left a comment on my Elaphone thread, and there is a link to his site.

Re: Elaphone: A flared fipple flute constucted from staves
Hello Cory, Being one who makes unusual instruments and breaks design rules, I thought I'd make a few comments. I was curious that this being an expanding bore instrument that it might behave sort-of like a cross between a Native American Flute and Pennywhistle. The Native Flute don't attempt to hi...

Re: On the tonal characteristics of different woods
My experience as a vibrational woodworker (drums, flutes, didges, basses, ext..) has led me to believe that the surface texture of the wood, the stiffness, as well as the wood density, have notable effect on the tone of the instrument, but not nearly as much as the thickness.. There is a world of di...
