Re: 20 mins of Low D whistle!
Very cool! I know nothing about all that electronic stuff, it's amazing to me. Two questions: 1) what make whistle? 2) are those pipes on the bench behind you? I played around 20 minutes on my Goldie Low D last night, at a memorial service I pipe at annually. I play pipes at the beginning and end. ...

Re: Generation High G or F Whistles - Experiences?
I have a Gen G. It is tiny, and it takes some concentration of where fingers are placed, because the spacing is close, but I don’t find it particularly cramped. I find the tone sweet and not particularly shrill. But then, I’m used to listening to the very high upper work of the pipe organ. It IS hig...

Re: Hello again!
Welcome back! I’ve been a member of this forum for a number of years — many of them inactive, sad to say. But I’ve recently found the time in the midst of job change to get back into learning the whistle. Like you, I also play NAF, and I suffer dreadfully from both FAD and WAD. This is a great place...

Best Sources for Learning New Tunes
I have several CDs of more modern stuff (Wyndham Hill and the like). There is limited opportunity for me to meet/work with accomplished, traditional whistlers/performing groups. Are there some well-known collections of sheet music (it’s odd — I’m a professional musician, but I learn visually, not au...

Re: Review: Brass body Killarney D whistle
Being a former organ builder, I can say that a smoother edge provides more overtones and thus a brighter tone. If we want to soften the tone, we would nick the edge. I don’t think the ramp, itself, makes much difference; it’s the angle. And smoothness of the edge that matters. Would that be a nick ...

Looking for Airgead Realta
Anyone heard anything lately from Curtis Dashner? I’ve got two of his whistles, and I’d be interested in more...

Re: Review: Brass body Killarney D whistle
[Thread revival - Mod] I guessed C was the one. Hooray me. ...looking at Ben's pics, both Killarneys' ramp surfaces show tooling that I would have considered rough, and furthermore each looks differently done. I wonder if leaving the ramp this way is by design, from the maker's experience th...

Flootoot, Don't say I didn't "warn" ya! CURTIS MAKES A VERY NICE WHISTLE! Now that you know this first hand, you will probably want more Airgead Realta whistles in various keys. T'is a slippery slope of whistle bliss. Enjoy your new whistle. Curtis Dashner will get increa...

Re: Authorization For Plum Wood Day on August 27th
Authorization is granted that August 27th be forever declared Plum Wood Day. For all those individuals, seasoned whistlers and newbies alike, being affected by WHOAD and further confused deciding which material to choose for a whistle with aesthetic, health, and musical ability concerns be it known...

Airgead Realta whistle
Bought an Airgead Realta in D from Ebay. Received the whistle today about noon. OMFG!!! This whistle is frickin' awesome! It has a nice, round tone that's rich in all the right overtones. I'm finding intonation consistent throughout, and regulation between notes also consistent throughout both regis...

Re: dumb Noob question
I'm a degreed musician, but am totally new to the whistle. And you've got a decent high D, right? (And from your previous threads I conclude that you're even fancying some high end whistles...) So if you mean it, why don't you just concentrate on this instrument before opening (the next) Pandora's ...

Re: Amazing Grace
I play the Native American Flute sometimes in church, just as a solo effort. But then, the NAF is enough of its own genre that it doesn't lend itself well to commercial-church-pop. Since I've built my church on a celtic Christian concept, I'd like to build a traditional Irish/Welsh group -- guitar, ...

Re: Tiny white spot on aluminum whistles (metal care in general)
I also play french horn, and I know that, in order to keep the "brass rot" at bay on the interior of the horn tubing, you should distribute a few drops of valve oil through the horn periodically. Is the same true of whistles? Should I be oiling my whistles? Is there a whistle care thread h...

Re: New band - Celtic (Christian) folky sound (with whistles)
In essence 'Celtic' is a meaningless label, especially when applied to a musical genre. Many people will have a multitude of associations when they hear the term used though. The clip, to my ears, didn't represent anything I would understand as something usually covered by the 'celtic' umbrella. At...
