Re: Best Beginner's Flute

Yeah, I have never had the opportunity to play one of Doug Tipple's flutes but i know someone that has one and he loves it, doesn't have any other flutes and has no urge to switch to a more expensive conical bore flute. His flute has a very nice sound and I always thought it looked awsome, white, a...

Re: Best Beginner's Flute

Yeah, it's plastic. No, it does not sound plastic. I don't think there actually is a plastic sound. There is definately a feel and a look to plastic. As Gordon said earlier, it is the architecture of the flute ineracting with the musician that makes the sound and i myself have never heard a whistle...

Re: Best Beginner's Flute

I wanted to buy a flute that I could afford and that I could try out without spending a lot of money. I don't like plastic flutes. However, I was considering getting a Dixon dual head whistle/flute. After checking reviews here, I bought a Doug Tipple flute. Yeah, it's plastic. No, it does not sound ...

Ain't it the truth? The trouble is finding something you can't lose that makes you happy.

Re: Lower lip position relative to embouchure hole

Jan - I think you really ought to stick with one flute for a while, especially when new. Eric Thanks, Eric. :) I can see that it is going to take some getting used to. No sense in adding more complications. Besides, this flute from Doug Tipple is really nice. No need to be switching to another one....

Re: Lower lip position relative to embouchure hole

Hm . . . So, as a newbie who just got her flute (Doug Tipple F - very nice!), does this mean I should probably not switch between flutes for awhile?

Re: Fiddle bow "scratch triplets" on flute?

My apologies - I meant Grey Larson. As to the search tool, I have been trying to use it but am not coming up with what I need. I will do a google search.

Again, my apologies to Grey.

Re: Fiddle bow "scratch triplets" on flute?

I have a question, please. I just ordered an Irish flute from Doug Tipple and I don't know all of these terms you are using - cran, birl, glottal, etc. Is there a good resource that explains all of this - a glossary or book? I have Gary Larson's book for the whistle (which I haven't started yet). Do...

Re: Nellie's Waltz, my 1st whistle composition and recording

That was lovely! Thank you for sharing. I will have to see if I can find Spotify.

As to the two versions, I think I liked the sound of the second one better - can't really explain why. Sounded more - mellow, maybe?

Nice job!

Re: What is your session like?

I get the impression that there are at least three general sorts of sessions: - the type Gumby describes - a few friends or musical acquaintances playing in the corner of a pub or a kitchen - the Comhaltas group sessions - with lots of people, tunes, and socializing as in the "seeing John off ...

Re: What is your session like?

The pics and video are so cool! Don't know if there's anything like that near me, but there is an Irish pub downtown so there's a good chance there is. However, I am not a pub person, nor am I brave enough to play in front of anyone else. I wouldn't even know where to begin to join in. Guess I can h...

Best,
That's good to know 'cause I'm thinking about ordering a Tony Dixon duo whistle/flute! :D
