Re: Contacting Andreas Rogge

I have a flat set on order from him, and the last bit correspondence I’ve had with him was back in October.

He is usually quite prompt, but from what he has said it sounds like he has got a lot on his plate as of now and is quite backlogged with orders.

Re: Rogge copy of Ennis' set

I have a C# Rogge on order, should be coming this late summer or fall. While every chanter is different, including copies, I do indeed wonder, and even believe that, at fleeting moments, “that” sound could come out. I will see once I get it. As others have said on other threads, it can depend largel...

Re: Vanishing Bass Regulators

I would go so far as to say I think flat pipes truly shine their best when they are on their own (Though I have heard some duo's with a fiddle which sound nice). They are pretty quiet anyways, but again, I think they are better suited for more intimate settings, like at someone's home or when most e...

Re: Vanishing Bass Regulators

Of course, I wouldn't dispute that. Planxty, Chieftains, Spillane, Keenan, Rigler , etc... all made the pipes accessible. Still doesn't change the fact that Ennis was immensely important in the piping world. But I get what you're saying. Interestingly enough, on some of the Titanic soundtracks, it s...

Re: Vanishing Bass Regulators

, like his very distinctive sounding cran. I slowed some recordings down, it sounds like he cuts mostly with the A finger. In some recordings It sounds it’s ADAA, sometimes, or AFDAA (On the Lark’s March) I’ve listened to another piper, Sean McAloon, who also cuts with the A finger, “AAAA” in some ...

Re: Vanishing Bass Regulators

See I feel like even from Clancy, I hear THAT chanter despite. The style is definitely different, but there is a sound, an ineffable sound, in the mid range of the lower octave, that comes through regardless of whose fingers are on the holes. I can hear it from Colm as well. That said, I completely...

Re: Vanishing Bass Regulators

Certainly. I’d say O’Flynn, Ennis, Moloney (and perhaps a few others) had a very recognizable style of playing, you can listen to a recording and immediately tell who you are listening to without having to look up any information on said track. There is one player, I don’t remember his name, he went...

Re: Vanishing Bass Regulators

Isn't it the case that Liam O'Flynn's set of pipes was originally ordered by Sean Reid from Leo Rowsome with the particular instruction to make it sound as close to a flat set as possible whilst preserving the volume and pitch of concert D? I have heard that yes, very interesting. Also very cool ho...

Re: Vanishing Bass Regulators

I will also have to agree, the bands such as Planxty, Chieftains, Bothy Band, Spillane, etc... And widespread availability and volume of concert D pipes have made them much more widely available to many folk around the world. I can vouch for the power of a wide bore pipe when in the hands of a skill...

Re: Vanishing Bass Regulators

Suppose there had been no Leo Rowsome, and so there was a great, gaping lacuna in pipe making, even just for a few years. In that case, given the great ‘bridging’ role that Seamus Ennis had in carrying the tradition across a generational and societal gap, playing a flat set, do you suppose the rena...

Re: Vanishing Bass Regulators

Soft , Purring Pipes is what the UP is all about for me.... Those CP's are getting far too loud.... trying to compete wih Accordions and Concertinas... no point. My wife plays the Cabrette and that is one loud fecker and I found an accordeon that is loud enough to accompany it.... and I have a conc...

Re: FS: Rogge C# 3/4 set in plum, boxwood w/ 3-keyed chanter

Although I am not buying as I have a C# Rogge set on order, would you mind posting a sound sample as to give an example of what it sounds like? Anything would do. I will greatly appreciate it, many thanks.
