sinking calfskin
The skin on my Lyon and Healy tenor has loosened to the point that my bridge is sinking, causing some fret buzz. Is there an easy fix for this? I thought of wetting the skin and letting it dry out but I'm not sure. I have virtually no experience with calfskin vellums, but I understand they're pricey...

setup tenor banjo for Irish
So, I just won an e-bay auction for a Lyon and Healy tenor that dates back to the early 1900's. I'm very excited and want to set it up for Irish tuning right away. I already ordered a couple of sets of DAddario Irish strings, but does anyone have any suggestions for set-up? Should I replace the brid...

Re: Your favourite hornpipes?!
I love hornpipes-a few that I play are Chief O'Neil's Favorite,The First of May, The Glenbeigh, wich I learned from a Barney McKenna performance on youtube, and Napoleon Crossing the Rhine, which could also be a barndance but I like it better as a hornpipe. I also just picked up Burn's, which is the s...

Re: I'm only playing in D min!
Tam Lin-both in D minor and A minor. On the fiddle it's pretty much the same in either key,but on the 5 string banjo it's like learning 2 different tunes(fingering wise)

Re: Any 5-stringers out there?
Crooked:redundant is my middle name. And my first name... As far as 5th string spikes go, I do a lot of fretting on the 5th string, playing melodic style, and I wonder if ther spikes might get in my way. Anyone have any experience with this? On another subject altogether today I had a kind of breakt...

Re: Any 5-stringers out there?
I started playing banjo many years ago when my boss at the music store where I was teaching guitar asked me if I taught banjo. I said no,and he handed me a 5 stringer and said "Now you do." I took the thing home and mucked around with it till I had the basics down-as a Classical guitarist ...
