Re: humbled after Hurricane Sandy
Hey y'all, It has been a minute since I have checked in on C&F; I wanted to let you all know that we are officially (as of 2 weeks ago)living on board our 43ft sloop, Catherine here in Brooklyn and I am up and running to teach tin whistle (Skype) lessons on my sailboat. Now if that doesn't sound...

Re: looking for a video tutorial on flute maintenance
Casey,
Thanks for your post. I will be looking for it when it comes up. Can you give us a heads up when you do? Also, I know you are very busy, but would you consider adding how to properly wrap the joints as well?
best

Hey folks,
I am trying to find a decent video that demonstrates how to properly oil a keyed wooden flute as a reference. Help!

Re: What are your favourite slip jigs?
The Monaghan Jig, a four part tune that sits really nice on the flute....i will post up the tune in my blog once i get it recorded. Yes, it is just a jig. If you are looking for a slip jig, try Down in Abbey from Sean Moloney.

Re: Belfast tin whistle player Peter Maguire Master Class in NYC
Jerry, I couldn't agree with you more. I didn't make it to his class on account of being out of the town for the weekend, but I did go to the Landmark Tavern last night where I met Peter. Peter is a top class musician (lungs built like a brick), not to mention a really sweet guy all around. He was p...

Re: Advice on practicing for a beginner
Tintin's suggestion of playing long tones is a great way to warm up your instrument and also work on your embouchure as you play each note. I would also suggest playing each note (say starting with high B) for as long as humanly possible. Before you play the note, inhale as much air as you can, expa...

Re: Advice on practicing for a beginner
One last suggestion, memorizing your tunes is crucial to playing ITM, and the more you do it, the easier it gets. You can focus on your tone, intonation, technique, and ornamentation with more ease if you have the notes of the tune under your belt. Looking at the music is just another task that gets...

Re: Tonguing Cuts/Rolls
Everyone learns at different pace. Some folks are more comfortable learning the "bare bones" of the tune first, leaving the ornaments until they memorize the whole tune first. More skilled players are comfortable learning the ornaments while memorizing the tune. As you stated that you are ...

Re: Tonguing Cuts/Rolls
I would have to certainly agree with MTGuru. Tonguing is certainly used in playing tunes on the tin whistle. I would suggest learning and memorizing the tune first (in a legato fashion, not tonguing every note) before you start any embellishments, such as tonguing. As you have been so used to tongui...
