Re: Somers flute blows flat

The seller got back to me, and he didn't notice the flute blowing flatter than any of his other flutes, so either he subconsciously adjusted something, or it's just me.

Re: Somers flute blows flat

Is there any way you can easily get the flute into the hands of another decent player to see if it plays up to pitch for them? That’s often the quickest way to sort out whether it’s the flute or the player. I'm 100% with Loren on this...it's the best test out there. Eric Unfortunately, there aren't...

Re: Somers flute blows flat

Interesting observations. I did try with a tuner, and I can see how a small change in mouth position brings the pitch down. I fiddled with it until I found the best spot. With the slide all the way in, and blowing as powerfully as i could, I could get the pitch dead on all the way up and down two oc...

Re: Somers flute blows flat

Yeah, there are some verdigris spots. Seems like the only part of the flute that might have a maintenance issue in the future.

The measurement I'm getting from center of embouchure to the third hole down is about 305mm when fully compressed.

Re: Somers flute blows flat

I added a couple of extra photos to the album. My flute says
"G. Somers
P"

I'm assuming that means it's the Pratten model.

Re: Somers flute blows flat

I tried to get some photos. Hopefully, you can access them with the link:

The head isn't lined. Looks like there's an inner copper tube inserted into the head, and then a removable chrome sleeve over that that also goes into the head.

Somers flute blows flat

I acquired a Delrin keyless D flute by Gary Somers a few months ago, and I enjoy it, but it plays flat compared to my other flutes. I have to push the tuning slide all the way in to play on pitch (and/or use an app to adjust the pitch to match). It looks like Gary Somers isn't making flutes anymore,...

Re: Is There Actually Any Difference Between Generation Models?

The only difference I noticed between the 'Boho' Generation and the standard Generations was that the head was much tighter, and that the paint/wrap seemed to dampen the tone a bit, effectively having a slightly thicker wall.

Re: Whistle makes and attributes quandary

JP Le Meur listed an A whistle a few days ago, and I let it sit for a while before finally springing for it. I'll let you know how it goes. I have a low F by him that seems like it meets your requirements. It's very responsive, easy to blow, with crisp, defined notes. I'd say it compares very favora...

Re: Who is making good tapered/conical high D whistles?

Note that Carbony has gone through a few mouthpiece iterations, and they're wildly different. You might talk to Rob about what sound you enjoy, and maybe he has an older mouthpiece that might suit you better. Mine is a softer, breathier, higher backpressure version than the later models I tried. I w...

Re: Does anyone recognize this vintage whistle?

Is there information out there about the history of the Generation whistles and how they went from that old style to the modern plastic head versions? Their website implies they didn't really start until the 60s. Clearly, the Generation whistle is much older than that, but I was having trouble findi...

Sold - MK Pro Alto G (green!)

$200 + shipping (firm) I bought an alto G MK Pro a few months ago for curiosity. I'm not a fan of any of the midrange MK whistles I've played, and while this one is absolutely gorgeous, it plays like the (equally gorgeous) red low F I sold a while back. It's a wide bore, so it has a full, robust ton...

Re: Low Impact Low D

I can't see an Alto G on their website but when I think of their low whistles, I think of them as having big bores and being quite bulky. Perhaps I'm wrong. Maybe I'll get to play one of their whistles one day. They can do any key. I've got an alto G from them, as well as an Ab and F# (plus a bunch...

Re: Low Impact Low D

. Have you ever played a small-bore Goldie like the E or Eb? I haven't, but I've heard great things. In the last few years, I've started appreciating narrow bore low whistles more. I have a Reviol alto set (one whistle head plus A, G, F, and E bodies), and when I first played them, I felt the E bod...
