Re: Synthetic drone reeds
My Martin Preshaw B set has what he calls "hybrid" drone reeds; tubular plastic bodies with a wood or cane (hard to tell which) tongue, bound to the body and using an o-ring for a bridle. I like the sound very well, and they are fairly forgiving of changes in environmental conditions. The ...

Had a friend ages ago that had a stack of Seán Ó Riada/Ceoltóirí Chualann records, and we listened to them a lot and began to play along with them.ltwhistle wrote:Curious to know how did you learn to play the tin whistle

Re: Young Beginner Whistle
I'm teaching one of my grandsons; I bought him an off-the-shelf (well, over the internet) Generation D and it has been fine. He's making pretty good progress.

Eh, something from the Heather Clarke tutor, because that is what my teacher used.rorybbellows wrote:What was your very first tune?
The first one that I wanted to learn, that I still remember to this day is "Cliffs of Dooneen". I had played it on the whistle for a long time before I got my first pipes.

Re: Where have you taken your whistle?
The first Generation D I ever bought used to go with me everywhere, in a coat pocket. I practiced at bus stops while waiting for the next bus. Even had the odd impromptu session on a bus. The occupying forces didn't like it; when I was frisked they would sometimes find it and (I guess) think it was ...

Re: Generation Convert
No, I'm not opening the door to those who claim that every Generation is awful until you stumble upon one of the magical ones that got away. If that's the case then every Generation whistle I own or have owned would be one of those "magical" ones, and what's the odds of that? My experienc...

Re: What’s Your Session Whistle of Choice?
Just curious as to what everyone who plays at sessions here trots out the most. I don't play in sessions very often, but when I do, it's my Generation D. Why is your session whistle(s) the one(s) you use at a session? I've never found another one I like better, and I'm used to it, i.e. it does what...

Sorry, but I just can't resist: I was trying to resist but you've started now. Here's one example a bit closer to home that immediately came to mind: https://i.postimg.cc/XN131yWm/downes6-small.jpg Doug Kershaw the Cajun fiddler plays like that all the time, standing up and dancing around while he'...

Hmmm ... I had both of those records; the connection never occurred to me. I no longer have a turntable, but I have that Yes album on my itunes - not the Focus one though.

Re: So just what is an "advanced whistle player"?
Just what is an advanced whistle player? Technical mastery is a given, of course, but what does this include? Would it include little-used techniques such as cranns? I would not consider myself an "advanced" player by any means, but I use crans a lot - not what I would call a "little...

Re: Tenor Drone Reed
Drones are quite sensitive as to where the bridle is placed, and very small movements up and down can have quite a large impact.
