Re: Anyone own a Tony dixon 3 piece delrin? Upgrading worth

I've had a Dixon 3 piece for a few years. At first I thought it sounded quite bad. But after improving as a player and also modifying the embouchure hole it now sounds quite good. It (now) has a lively tone and is very easy to play. No doubt an M&E (I have three) will sound better, but it will p...

Re: Sudden embouchure problems on lower notes

Thanks for your input, all of you! Yes, I now realise this kind of embouchure problem can happen now and again to many players. Room temperature and humidity may also have played a part at this time of year. The problem got a little better after three days or so. And then I had an "emergency&qu...

Sudden embouchure problems on lower notes

I've been playing for 4-5 years or so. I've practised and played a lot during this time. A couple of nights ago I was playing for an hour or two and everything was working very well. Embouchure working very well. Hard low D easy, et c. Yesterday evening something had happened. The lowest notes were ...

Re: Boosey & Co Pratten Perfected ( 1895 )

Pat, I have a late one whith almost exactly the same measurements. 571mm and 243mm.

Plays at A-440 with the tuning slide at about 18-19mm.

Slightly less responsiveness than with the tuning slide all the way in.

Looking for a low C.
An Alba would be nice.

Preferably in the EU or UK.

Re: The most dramatic low d whistle sound

Probably something with a higher backpressure, not too "free blowing". More resistance gives you more room for expression, like diaphragm vibrato or bendings. So a low D that jumps rather easily into the 2nd octave might not be the best choice. Maybe a hard-blowing Goldie might be a good ...

Re: A good high D for loud sessions

Chieftain/Kerry mezzo whistles are probably the loudest there are and have a thick tone as well as loud. The Chieftain Custom high D is similar. Also very powerful but a little woodier tone.

Re: David Angus Flutes

I bought one of his low whistles a couple of years ago and sent it back. The (low) E note was way sharp! So much so that playing in E minor would sound bad. I recently listened to a soundclip of one of his flutes and it had the same problem. Low E was far too sharp... So I second the M&E suggest...

Re: Alba or MK Kelpie low F?

In my experience the curved windway helps prevent clogging. I had lots of problems with this with the Goldie I once had. But it hasn't been a problem with Albas and MKs. I have neither tried Alba F nor MK F whistles, but I have owned A whistles by both makers. I felt the MK had a tendency to sound h...

Re: Sweetening the high end

I've only now recently experienced such a problem with the high end...I've played most of the "top" makers and most of the "standard" models, Gen. Feadog, Walton's, etc..( curently very happy with my set of Sindts) I've always been able to control the high end with breath or sha...

Re: Sweetening the high end

On many(most?) whistles the higher the note, the more piercing it is. This is of course true of many other instruments as well. A fife or piccolo will sound more piercing than a flute. A fiddle more so than a cello... When I play for older people I often use Low whistle and flute, but rarely high D ...

Re: “The perfect busker’s whistle?”

Both the Chieftain Mezzo high D and the Chieftain Custom (wood body) are very, very loud whistles. I seriously doubt there are any louder ones around. I find they are very useful in louder band gigs, where you need to be able to hear yourself. There is a slight tweak that can be done to make the hig...
