Re: Dave Page uilleann piper and accordion player

Dave Page lived here in San Diego from the mid-1970s until his death in 1987, and I got to know him and his wife well. By the time I met him, he was no longer playing the pipes, but still played piano accordion and whistle, and he was very generous and encouraging to us younger musicians with an int...

I've had a number of interested queries, but the mandolin is still unsold.

FS: 1984 Stefan Sobell 10-string large-body mandolin

Indian rosewood back, sides, and headstock veneer, western red cedar carved top, mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard and bridge, bone nut and saddle. Adjustable truss rod. This is a one-owner instrument, completely original, with that prized, clear, bell-like tone of the early Sobell instruments. Amazi...

Re: Pictures of Your Pipes

There is an interesting story behind the acquisition of the maple in my set. Came from a farmer in Oregon back in the 80's and has been aging since. To be honest, It's not entirely clear that this is the wood that Hubbert got from me in the early '80s. It's the same species and quality, and looks t...

Re: Pipe conservators?

Michael Hubbert is a very experienced woodwind instrument restorer, and an impeccable craftsman; a friend of mine had him refurbish an old Alf Kennedy set a few years ago, and was quite happy with the results.

Re: Nice interesting timber for a new batch of bellows

I have worked with both tulipwood and tulip poplar; what you have there is the latter. Perfectly suitable for bellows boards, but not tulipwood. There's a big difference between these timbers. If it was very expensive then your supplier is taking advantage of you. This wood is available in the US at...

Your site looks good, Ted. Best of luck with it!

I haven't forgotten the gauge, I've just been busy with a really filthy repair job and Mike's wedding. Shouldn't be long now!

Re: Duct tape + poppy seeds = chanter fix!

I have seen an image of a Koehler & Quinn B chanter with tiny black "guide bumps" above and below the tone holes for the lower hand, placed by the makers. My (possibly faulty) recollection is that these were to address the needs of a customer who had suffered some nerve damage to that ...

Re: Estate Auction Pipes - with pictures

Is the all-metal chanter aluminum? It looks like it from the photos, much bluer than the warmer color of the nickel-silver keywork. If it's aluminum, it's most likely 20th century work patterned on an earlier Taylor chanter, as aluminum was quite an exotic and costly material at the time the Taylors...

Re: Pipers in the 1901 census

Dave Page was born in 1906. As Tom noted above, he's in the 1911 census:
