Re: Irish wire strung harp
Any advice as to makers and learning sources? ... I'm wondering (1) the difficulty level of a folk harp instrument in general, and (2) will I lose a good bit of the desired sound by not playing it with my fingernails. I play harp too. There's quite a range of clarsachs, folk harps (diatonic); regio...

Re: To Vent or Not To Vent....Eb
Oh ...not sure I see  Would letting the Fnatural open while playing Eflat not still sound like Fnatural skewed? Perhaps it sounds like an attempt to correct the intonation of a vintage flute (or less well designed one)which doesn't play equal temperament or in tune for its scale but maybe I've ...

Re: To Vent or Not To Vent....Eb
nice going. Big fan of playing Bach solo flute sonatas on simple system too. Baroque traverso players will vent for the Eflat notes; this is what the Bach flute sonatas were written for. As mere mortals on simple system flute, we should vent the Eflat too :) A vented Eflat note is weak already on th...

In memory of Mr Thomas O'Halloran - Irish busker in London
Mr O'Halloran, a sprightly 87 year old Irish immigrant to London in the 1970s was stabbed and killed on his way to busk on his mobility scooter this week. https://www.standard.co.uk/news/crime/murder-suspect-greenford-thomas-o-halloran-stabbing-mobility-scooter-b1019276.html Wishing his family some ...

Re: Poljez flutes
Hi does anyone know does Pol still make flutes? Kind regards K. Yes he does ~ and has a very very long waiting list. Pol lives in Morhiban (magical place!) I've met him when he made a very unique keyed flute with amazing intonation across 3 1/2 octaves. His keywork is evolving peerlessly: he's the ...

Re: Slow Key-Easy Fix?
Sure - it's simple system ... simple fix especially if it's block mounted or pin mounted. First check it's parallel and straight down the long F key without denting, kinking or bent out of shape. Soft cases are the worse for this - ill fitting lids which squash the F key and deform the soft silver t...

Re: England to US Mail Question
Ben - use www.royalmail.com as a website tracking with your GB (Great Britain) tracking reference. You can follow it that way all the way to the USA. When it arrives and is processed in the USA, the Royal Mail tracking number is assigned a parallel USPS number which you can track. Langley, UK is the...

Re: Basic wooden flutemaking method, and resources
Thanks Greenwood - not a flute maker here - player mostly. The vintage era Rudall Rose flutes are very well made with all the tuning challenges you describe. I find the modern makers are particularly incredible at modifying the Rudall Rose bore to make up for the original limitations. I could never ...

Re: [Solved? ] Bringing low D into line on Rudall short foot
Wonderfully inventive part-solution! I could follow most of it, although I found my solution the Rudall Rose short foot more elegant - I got rid of it and traded for a better modern tuned Rudall Rose copy  As lovely as historical flutes are, and they do hold their own position and legacy, a mod...

Re: A unique Pratten style flute :-D
The recording sounds reasonable, even if a little closely picking up and dry. What is your recording method like? I've done a few amateur studio recordings and live (terrible balancing). One of the biggest mistakes was to use a low frequency Hertz cut-off and not realise this effectively muted the b...

"Tonehole, Arthur, and anyone else who might have a flute or flutes handled by Paul Davis/Davies over the years. Can I get you to check under the touch of the upper C key to see if there are any markings. You will probably need to pull the pin to be able to see it. " Hi Terry - I can't see...

Re: Mollenhauer single key flute?
Rykirk - that's good news. Your Aulos resin Grenser is the most basic traverso on the market. If you are happy with this mass manufactured piece, just about every other baroque traverso will be even more exciting. For a chromatic instrument, the baroque traversos are super compared to the cost of di...

Re: Remembering Paul Davis/Davies
A few years ago Paul's widow, Turid, contacted me. She still has a number of his flutes and is only gradually sorting through these. Currently I am advertising two flutes on her behalf, a 10-key Cabart and 5-key Lamy. From the flutes that I have seen Paul certainly had a keen eye for a good flute, ...
