Re: Waltons Little Black D

Tweak it. At least stuff the head with poster putty as per instructions. I tried it once and now do it on all my whistles. It's totally reversible too, unless you have to break the glue holding the head, but on a feadog I dont think there is any. Never tried the 'o-ring' tweak, now I'm curious.

Re: Playing the 2nd Octave on the Tin Whistle help?

Try a Clarke sweetone or meg, but also tweak your oak. I got a feadog that was unplayable out of the box, particularly in the second octave, but after tweaking it it's my favorite. It's simple, just the putty trick will do. But breath controll makes a big difference too. Also, playing enough at one ...

Tunable only to a point?

I just got a really beautiful alto G Dixon whistle in the mail, and the thing has a voice like pure gold. It's just lovely. It's also very well in tune with itself. However, when i go to tune it, the further out I pull the head, the worse it tune to itself it becomes. By the time I get it in tune wi...

Re: SO disappointed... any tips?

If you like the clarks, why switch? I play a sweetone that I painted black with fingernail polish almost exclusively. I got a feadog and hated it too, although since I stuffed the head (the putty trick) it's not only playable, but growing on me rather swiftly. I also have three old gens that i give ...

Re: I am a complete whistle neophyte!

As far as I can tell the consensus seems to be that in general, any whistle will do. If your going for loud, stear clear of he conical bore whistles made by Clarke. The sweet tone (my favorite) does indeed have an incredibly sweet sound, but it's mellow. As mentioned, anything with Jerry Freeman's s...

Re: Mic on a whistle?

Thanks Feadoggie, that helps. My husband suggested a headset type arrangement (wired, I think) but i think that would be uncomfortable for me. Now, there is a real band playing later on that night, and they'll have their gear set up so I can probably just use their stuff. I assume they use dynamic m...

Mic on a whistle?

So, my dad (on fiddle) and I (on whistle) have agreed to play a few tunes for St. Patties day at the bar where I work. He has a pickup on his fiddle, but doesnt have a lot of experience with micing a whistle. Any advice? We talked about going acoustic, but it's a fairly large open room with paneling...

So that's the A below the low D? Good grief, I didn't know they made them that big!

Dixon low G- plastic or metal?

Well, the plastic low G is cheaper but from my experience I'm usually partial to metal whistles. Has anyone had the oportunity to play both? Anyone love their metal or polymer Dixon?

Re: Newbie question

Generally it seems like if you want to change keys, you change whistles. So if you learn a tune on your C whistle, you will play it just the same on a D whistle. It will be in a different key, but the fingering will be the same. It's always good to know what the notes are so looking at a fingering c...

Re: Susato High D harsh in Upper Register

Consider getting a clark sweetone. Cheap, easy to play, and possibly the other end of the whistle spectrum from the susato. Plays fairly quiet, nice and clear in the second octave. I have two, actually one is the 'celtic', but there's not much different between the two. Nicer paint job, maybe a litt...

Re: Tune of the fortnight 15/03/2012 - Scatter the mud

Wanderer- Just basic reference. I was looking for the tune played slow, I don't expect anyone would believe either of those examples is the best the it could be.
