Re: UK Citizenship Test

12/15. And one of the ones I missed was a wrong click (I *knew* which King was defeated by Oliver Cromwell, drat it!). Amusing, since most of my knowledge of British history is from casual reading. But I think it's more that not everyone is interested in history. I find it interesting, so I pick thi...

Re: Sour kraut and KimChee

One of the things that really surprised me when I first worked in Korea was the number of "German style" beer hall/restaurants I saw around Seoul. The times I tried them, they were a pretty decent for a late-night meal, though they substituted kimchee for sauerkraut as often as not. A Kore...

Re: Can you play a C song in D?

The brain works in strange ways. How many of us can't remember a tune at all - totally unable to start it it - but can pick it up and play along if someone plays the first measure or so? I'm really bad at that - at any time, I might only have at most couple of dozen tunes I can easily start, but a m...

That's why you should consider playing a Low whistle or flute - peace through Assured Mutual Destruction

Re: Suppose the U.S. stopped making pennies?

I'll bet they beg plenty. Not at all, they do have little alms bowls, but I think they're more followers of Lao-tzu than the Buddha. They don't seem to agree that I'm the boss. I've had a couple of Siamese (one of my favorite breeds), and they, by contrast, were shameless beggars. And they danced w...

Re: My goodness, is it really that bad?

Is it hatred, or an attempt to join in? ;-? Cats are odd critters - some love whistle, some loathe it with a passion. Ditto for other instruments. Our current cat loves the whistle; if she's out in the yard I can call her in by playing. If I play sitting she'll try to climb into my lap and rub her h...

Re: I just had the weirdest experience!

I get what people mean about different styles of directions (I *can not give* directions my wife can follow. Nor can she give directions *I* can follow. We process location very differently. I love maps. She . . . doesn't. Loves GPS, though.)

But this guy sounds a bit of each: rude and odd.

Re: What's your current 'weapon' of choice?

Cochran R & R (Delrin, keyless, medium holed)
Burns Folk Flute (Mopane, 2 piece version)

I wish I could play either one up to its potential.

Wish I could be there - you're always a lot of fun. Especially when you start translating Hula lyrics on the fly

Maybe we should talk about another SF Bay area gathering. Tony and I both decided to let it ride until someone brought the idea up

Re: Survey: tallest buildings ?

San Jose CA's got a twofer: "The 88", a condo tower is the official tallest building in town: it's one foot taller than city hall. Just for bragging rights - since they are a few blocks apart it's a coin toss which one's actually higher above either sea level or the sidewalk. But San Jose ...

Re: Hummus

If you live near a Costco and are too lazy to make your own, try their hummus. The brand is called "Sabra". It's very good. Yup. I started buying it after a recommendation from an Israeli friend - he told me that it was good enough that he never bothered to make his own any more. And that...

Re: water filters

If we had sulphorous water, I'd filter it to...but other than that, I've rarely come across bad tap water. Second that. But a lot of urban supplies, though perfectly safe to drink, taste less than wonderful. Not "bad", just . . . not really good. The best drinking water I've ever tasted w...

Re: Request for a jig, a reel and/or a hornpipe

One you'll hear a lot: listen to the music you want to play. Get to the point that you can hum it, or mouth-whistle the tune with the proper rhythm. I've got the same problems you describe - I can read the sheet music, but it's really hard for me to really pick up a tune if I haven't heard it. I've ...
