Re: What's new in whistles?

While I appreciate and support the caution folks express toward sharing of wind instruments at this time, I think some of the thoughts expressed above are overkill. Speaking as someone in the medical arena as well as a former Quality Control analyst in an ISO-6 cleanroom, a brief soak in 70% or grea...

Re: What's new in whistles?

I'm finally getting ready to release my own line of Classic-Generation-inspired high whistles, which I've mentioned a few times in the past here. It's been slow going during the pandemic due to burnout both on the project and my day job. However, I rallied some energy recently and am finishing up th...

Re: WIDesigner release 2.4.0 now available

Thanks again for helping me understand how the different attributes are used, and pointing out the rounding! Is there a "local cache" or anything of that nature that can be purged? I think some of my less-reproducible anomalies might stem from something like that. I created a github accoun...

Re: Could a Bagpipe Have Metal Reeds??

Just got an interesting bit of info from my friend Zexuan - apparently mylar (that metalized plastic stuff) can also be used to make very good synthetic reeds. It's metal in part, I guess!

Re: Chip and Fiffle

This has got to be a joke placeholder that actually made it in to a final version, like when I swapped "Sedation Level" for "Mardi Gras Coefficient" in some clinical documentation one time...

That was a tough conversation to have.

Re: WIDesigner release 2.4.0 now available

Trying to get back at whistlemaking, but encountered some additional questions: 1. Does "Blowing level" affect anything beyond the position of the blue circles on the graph? It doesn't affect the values in the table. 2. Is there any benefit to using "DIRECT" calculation? It takes...

I'd like to take a look at that product for my own, if it's as good as you say. Got a name/supplier?

Re: Medieval / German bagpipe cover: A story you won't belie

Hahahaha that is brilliant! Nice compositing work, too - one of the cleaner jobs I’ve seen for a video like this.

I’m working on something similar but perhaps less “trad” - editing myself into the Glenn Miller Orchestra playing swing music on the smallpipes

Re: Could a Bagpipe Have Metal Reeds??

I believe the Chinese drone instrument “hulusi” has a metal reed, but uses a wide bore like a whistle.

Re: Introducing: The Fliphead

How are you making these “biocompatible?” I explored resin as a final material for my line of whistles but ultimately have opted for laser-sintered nylon for its safety. From my time in biotech I dunno if a thin (presumably painted-on) coating should be advertised as biocompatible unless you can sho...

Re: Carbon Fiber Flutes?

re: delrin I find it to be pretty acoustically "squishy." I own a delrin flute and a delrin set of flemish bagpipes, so it's not like I reject the material out of hand, but stiffer materials transmit more of the resonance that comes when a note is really "in the notch." Whether t...

Re: Carbon Fiber Flutes?

I believe he uses a shaped mandrel to form the carbon fiber “wet,” which automatically shapes the bore. It machines just fine, but I would be hesitant to work it dry without an excellent dust scavenger - aerosolized carbon fibers are not something you want in your lungs. I think the reason it’s not ...

Re: DIY Copper Pennywhistle with 3D Printed Mouthpiece

Your airblade design will influence how far into the airstream the edge should be raised, among other factors. I use Fusion 360 to aid in designing my instruments; it has a free version with most of the functions for home users. Bracker's hole calculator worked great for my first airblade design, bu...

Re: WIDesigner release 2.4.0 now available

Ha, I was only using RTTA because I was convinced my other tuning app didn’t give a Hz value. I opened the wrong app as I was beginning and found that it DOES display Hz, so I just used that!
