Where to begin on an acoustic guitar?
Hey everyone! I've been away from the boards for a while, doing college classes and trying to figure out where my life is going but also saving up for an acoustic guitar, which I was able to buy a couple weeks ago. I don't have too much experience with guitars except that since I was 13 I've had an ...

Re: Mountain Dulcimer?
I was just considering going the guitar or mandolin route...
I am not sure why I can't make up my mind! Though I suppose I'll play whatever I get.
I figure I will go down to the music shop and play with all the instruments until one I can afford makes me buy it.

Flogging Molly in Alaska!
I got to see Flogging Molly last night and I loved it! I love Flogging Molly and they were amazing to see live! I don't know if anyone has ever seen Metalocalypse but there is an episode where they have to play acoustic instruments and one of them says something like "What're those wooden thing...

Re: Mountain Dulcimer?
Thank you again for the incredibly helpful advice! I am excited now to get started. It seems like it will bide my time well until next year. Until then I will play my ukulele and tin whistles. It's time I learn another song on the whistle anyways. So far I can only play the Lord of the Rings Shire s...

Re: Mountain Dulcimer?
Awesome, thanks for the advice! I will see if they will attach the strap buttons for me and I'll order a hardshell case, and then I'll play with a few different brands of dulcimer strings. Is there anything else you'd absolutely recommend beginning with, to make life easier? Where's a good place to ...

Re: Mountain Dulcimer?
So are we in agreement that this would be a good deal? http://www.mcspaddendulcimers.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=3608 Also, have any of you ever needed any of the things listed as "Popular options with a standard dulcimer include: Bridge Compensation; Ebony Fretboard Overlay (Fretboard o...

Re: Mountain Dulcimer?
Well now that I've been investigating I'm still torn between the banjo and the dulcimer. I guess I'm being a wimp because around here the banjo has a bad reputation for being a redneck instrument. When I say I want to start playing the question I get the most is "Why?" but when I tell peop...

Re: Mountain Dulcimer?
Thanks for the reply Tim! Great information. I was looking at the same dulcimers you suggested! Indeed within my price range. As I'm looking I may try to set aside $500 for some of the extras. A nicer case, some books, picks, extra strings...the good stuff! I am a lover of the string instruments and...

Mountain Dulcimer?
Yes, I know I was just in here asking about Ukes. I totally bought a lovely soprano uke, learned to play a few songs and also pick it up every day or so to strum at it, or fingerpick some nice sounds. However, here in Alaska we receive something called a 'dividend' from the state. This year it's $80...

Re: Beginner Ukelele?
Haha! Thanks for all the advice Tor. :) Well my music store says they do have ukes, Luna and other, so I am going down there tonight to fiddle with them. I figure my price range is, at best, $120 and my hope is to find a Luna, Lanikai or Kala there in my price range. I plan on trying out concert and...

Re: Beginner Ukelele?
Thanks again everyone! I think I found a good one if I'm going to order on the internet. I'm going to call the music store here and see if they sell ukes. They may not, it's a small city. Amazon carries Luna ukeleles at a slight reduced price. I generally trust the reviews and a lot of them have rec...

Yes. I have been looking. I'm hoping to find some students who play traditional music. The college here is really diverse.

Re: Beginner Ukelele?
Thanks everyone! I was hunting around the internet and checked out the Lanikai ukes and they look really great to start with. I know the woes of buying a cheaper instrument that turns out to be horrible to learn on so I wanted to be smart about buying. I was looking at the sopranos and I think I'd l...

Beginner Ukelele?
Does anyone here play ukelele and is there a good beginner uke for around $100? I've seen some amazing Luna brand ukeleles but, while they make great instruments, they are expensive. I need a string instrument in case my lungs go out and I can't play my whistles! :P It's practical, you see. I have a...
