Re: good mics for flute recording...

Nothing beats ribbon mics for recording flutes. They are the most natural sounding, and take away a lot of the hissiness that a condenser mic emphasizes. Many brands out there these days, and very few bad sounding ones. They are much more delicate, so you have to take care of them, but it's well wor...

Musette de Cour (looking for info and an instrument)

I'm mostly a flute player, more baroque than 8-key, and have become quite interested in some of the baroque bagpipes. I love how that music just lets the drones hang out in the background while the music modulates through different keys... wild! I'm in New York City, and I don't image there are any ...

Re: Tone and breaking in

Maker A under-softens the edge (or doesn't soften the edge at all). The flute will start life very brightly, but gradually become warmer. Reaching its optimum will probably take some time. Maker B softens it considerably more, so that the excess sizzle is gone, and the warmth is developing well. Th...

Re: Claude Laurent Crystal flute on eBay!

I've said it before, but one of the coolest things about playing a Laurent flute is that it should sound just the same as it did when it was new. There's no question of bore shrinkage or distortion. The ones I've played have had extraordinary sounds. I own one myself, with a broken footjoint, and ha...

FS: Cameron 8-key flute, very rare

Hi all - I'm thinking of selling my Rod Cameron flute. It is grenadilla and silver, lined headjoint, made with ultra-cool Triebert style keys -- instead of having normal blocks, it basically has blocks of silver, which gives it an incredibly solid feel with perfect key action. It has a Rudall & ...

Re: Convert flute in odd keys

There were many Boehm flutes made in the 1920s in the key of Db, a half step sharp of concert. You'd have to transpose by a whole step, which should be simpler than what you're doing now, for most keys. Or jump ship completely and get a baroque flute in 415, which will be completely in tune with peo...

This is great! I love nyckelharpa, what an amazing instrument. Great to see flutes being used in new and unique directions.

Re: Claude Laurent Crystal flute on eBay!

Several people recently received emails from the seller, offering to sell it directly now for $8000. Well what happened to the ebay bid? Presumably it was a shill bid from himself. Pristine Laurents are worth lots of money, but this one certainly is not. He was lucky to get the high bid that he got,...

Re: calling inventors: we need a flute drone!

Well, you can play more than one note at a time on a flute.

This is possible on simple system flutes too. Difficult, but possible. People were even writing about it in the early 19th century.

Re: calling inventors: we need a flute drone!

I don't think both pipes can play at once. If they can, I'd like to know how! btw Lazarevitch is an unbelievable player... some of you would love his recordings.

Re: calling inventors: we need a flute drone!

For many years I've pondered the possibilities of a double flute, but I just don't think it's possible on a transverse embouchure. I have dreamed of being able to play one of these, but to my knowledge there's only one, and no plans for more: http://www.aulochrome.com/ I often play along with a Korg...

Re: WTB: 8-Key Pratten-like flute

I'm gonna have to cordially disagree with Pat here, even though I understand the reasons for that view. 8-key flutes were meant to play chromatically, and if you listen to some of the music that was written for them, you can hear that they were meant to be played with as much complexity as you want....
