Re: Learning tight embouchure

Ivan was there playing a John Gallagher. John also happened to be there and we talked flutes and stuff into the wee hours of the morning. I believe that Ivan played a Seth Gallagher, not a John Gallagher. I asked him at a session once. Ivan is one of the players quoted on Seth's flute page http://w...

Re: Rudall & Rose flute (or its data) needed....

My flute is 1771, but I never had the original head. It was restored by Chris Wilkes and he said the tenon that connects to the barrel had been shortened. I could try to do measurements, but I'm not sure how well I could do.

Re: Siccama flutes

That's my flute you're talking about. I bought it from David Migoya before I got my Rudall and Rose repaired and a new headjoint. Since I was playing the R&R I decided that it was better not to hold on the the Siccama that I wasn't playing. There was a lot I liked about it. It had a great sound....

Re: Which is Wood and which is Silver?

I prefer #2 over #1 slightly. ... To me #2 has a little more brilliance, slightly more pronounced higher frequencies. It sounds a little brighter, and for me more present, probably because of that. Now which is silver, which wood? From the common prejudice I would say the brighter one is silver, i....

See? There you go. I don't like to guess people's ages, either; people wind up hurt.
I definitely don't guess ages, or whether someone is pregnant (except in my head).

Re: Question about olwell waiting list

I'm all for maker's having time off, but this seems like a solvable problem. How about a business email address (and possibly phone no.) which you only check on your schedule? You could even have an automated response on weekends and when you're on vacation. It seems to me unreasonable to expect som...

Re: CITES Question

Does your flute have a serial number? When I traveled to England last April I was nervious about bringing my Rudall and Rose. I didn't have any documentation about buying it. I found this information about getting a certificate of registration before traveling. https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/detai...

Re: Hot Delrin!

It seems easy enough to try warming the flute by some other method than being out in the sun and see how it plays. Have you ever tried to measure the temperature difference? A flute warmed before it was played would start off warm but without condensation. I still have a problem with considering it ...

Re: Earplugs

Playing flute in the bottom two octaves as loud and for as long and as frequently as you possibly can is highly unlikely to harm your hearing (unless maybe you have other problems with it) unless it causes your partner, children or neighbour to run a skewer through them. Jem, What is the basis for ...

Re: Old Time Irish flute

Jim posted interestingly on this subject some time ago, and it sent me off to try to find some additional info about flute in old time music. I'd like, but don't have a copy of this: http://www.psupress.org/books/titles/0-271-00299-9.html The field recordings by guy who wrote that book are on YouTu...

Re: What's the current state of the slowdowning art?

I use a Rockboxed iPod classic. I can choose how slow I want it and it also has A-B repeat, so I can play just a part of a tune.

Re: That tucked-in position

A natural reaction to these issues can be to make yourself feel more comfortable by moving the whole flute closer to that top hand shoulder by rotating and lowering the head toward that shoulder. I think this is probably the most common reason for the tucked-in posture, rather than trying to actual...
