Re: FS CASEY BURNS Boxwood Folk Flute

Interesting that the curve seems to be in a good direction for a right handed player. I would think that if the curve went the other way it might cause the flute to rotate while playing.

Re: post surgery embouchure exercises

Sorry to hear that Janmarie! I will have to go through the same thing in the relatively near future. One week is nothing. I'd just kick back, relax, do what the doctor says, and let the healing take its proper course. One week is not going to compromise your embouchure, so don't compromise your heal...

Re: Need some help with a pain.

The pain started about five days ago. I rested and it got better, but then I had a couple of gigs and it's getting worse. I've stopped playing entirely. I've played for over a decade, often an hour a day, without this difficulty--till now. I'm thinking hard about weight lifting, though I've been do...

Re: Need some help with a pain.

It would be helpful to know how long the pain has been there and wether or not it's getting worse.

Re: How important is lifting the first finger on High D, really?

but when watching master players closely I notice that, even at blazing speeds, they execute each high D in the "first finger up" position. I don't think that's entirely true. If you look at this ever famous clip of Matt Molloy playing the Bucks of Oranmore you can see in the 3rd part he ...

Re: How important is lifting the first finger on High D, really?

When teaching, I suggest people to use oxx xxx as their sole fingering for middle D for this reason: playing crans on middle D is much easier with the c# hole open. With c# closed you will most certainly end up at the second harmonic of low D after playing a cut, especially if the cut is played wit...

Ebonite M&E and Delrin Forbes flutes for sale

It took a while to find the right flute for me and now that I have it's time to say goodbye to all my other flutes that I don't really play anymore. I have 2 nice ones listed currently in the UIE:

FS: Ebonite M&E and Delrin Forbes flutes

The Forbes Flute is sold. The M&E is still available. I have finally begun the process of saying farewell to some of the instruments that I’m not playing anymore. Both of these flutes are great players and virtually maintenance free which makes them the ideal instruments to have in the event of ...

Flute Nest

Just a little inspiration for those of us in the dry winter zones that would like a change from the old "tupperware container with a loose fitting lid" thing. I wanted to have my flute live in my bedroom this winter so I started searching for a nice looking container that would not empty m...

Re: Breaking the speed barrier

Not an answer to any of your specific questions but ornamentation can be sacrificed for speed. So, if you can't play it as fast as you need/want to with ornamentation then you can drop the ornamentation in order to keep up with everyone else. Davie Migoya mentioned this in a thread a while back and ...

Re: On the tonal characteristics of different woods

I think that the small variations in construction are actually a plus within the same style of flute -- that's the way actual flutes are made that people feel they hear a difference between, so it seems like a good target for a test. My guess would be that those small variations would either be ran...

Re: Why cocus?

Now, if a thief, of sorts, broke into your home and replaced your flute with a visually identical flute He'd have to be able to copy my breath smell on the head joint and i wouldn't wish that on any theif  What would be interesting would be to line the bores of wooden flutes with a thin layer ...

Re: Why cocus?

On the other hand you might be able to get past the "two identical flutes" problem by creating multiple identical flutes of varying woods. I was wondering if a study could be conducted using multiple flutes made of 2 different materials and using Terry McGee's raised lip plate head design...
