Re: B Whistle

Flat sets are uilleann pipes pitched lower than the normal D, e.g. C#, C, B etc. So basically in lower keys rather than simply 'flat', although they may be both (or indeed sharp!) because they're not always at A = 440.

Re: Flute Weights Sticky

The bigger issues, though: I haven't been able to play much recently due to arthritic hands Sorry to hear that, but me too, with my increasingly stiff, slow and unwieldy fused LH middle/index finger in particular now affecting flute more than most other instruments. I'm retiring in a few months, so...

Re: Inhaling through nose

I hadn't seen the clip of Hatao doing it on whistle and flute- that's impressive. Can't help but notice that tho he's quite capable, I've never seen him actually use circular breathing (aside from this vid) otherwise in his hundreds of Youtube vids. Oh, there's at least one more earlier one at http...

Re: Inhaling through nose

Hatao has done it on both whistle and flute:

But think it's more of a party trick on these instruments and not the most musical thing to do when breathing's normally an integral part of the rhythmic style!

I found out in Mandolin Cafe that TC is made in East Asia somewhere - Japan, Korea and China have all reportedly been manufacturing bases at some time or another - but it's owned by Saga which is owned by an experienced American bluegrass player on a mission to provide affordable good-quality instr...

Re: Comparison : Kerry Optima / Nightingale

Now this is a plain cylindrical low D whistle, caddguy? I didn't think it was possible for the second octave to be sharper than the first on such whistles. Yes, it is, Terry. It might defy acoustic expectations, but I've experienced it with several whistles including a Kerry Optima low E returned i...

That cannot be optimum unless you want a duplicate E hole! Also, what do you mean by the E hole: the one that's open to sound E or the lowest one fingered? (The former is correct, but I suspect you mean the latter.)

Re: Beginner flute upgrade: Galeon or Copley?

4) Do you recommend a flute with a tuning slide for a beginner? Nice to look at and have, but something like a Copley Delrin works just as well without. I have rings but no tuning slide on mine, but you can save further by skipping the rings too. 5) Also, the delrin Copley looks like it could be a ...

Re: What is an Irish Flute (1) - Irish Flute vs Classical and Romantic Period Flutes

Looking into the categories of Romantic and Classical eras; there is some ambiguity depending on whether you are thinking of music or the arts more generally. Beethoven is early Romantic, right? It's really more complicated than that when we're applying labels to a continuous evolutionary spectrum ...

Re: What is an Irish Flute (1) - Irish Flute vs Classical and Romantic Period Flutes

1. Don't know what's meant by "classical period." 1. Not sure what you mean by Classical period. The time of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, during which flutes evolved from single-keyed, baroque-style models towards the 19th century types favoured for traditional music today. http://www.old...

Re: Tweaking a Pakistan made flute?

I seem to remember (and this might be a gross libel!) that Mendocino (?) maker Rod Cameron used to upgrade Pakistani-made flutes to useable status. I hope I have that right! Assertions like that are arguably actionable under law... I thought he reamed out plastic Aulos baroque flutes. But maybe he ...

Re: CP ANNOUNCING: The Freeman tweaked Klezmer whistle ....

In western European classical music it's called "harmonic minor" which is misleading. Only taking a different note as the tonic, i.e. G A Bb C D Eb F# G instead of D Eb F# G A Bb C D. The scale has a Major 3rd and calling it a "minor" scale is simply incorrect. In which case it'...

Re: C Whistle - Transpose or Not

@Peter Duggan - I know nothing about recorders except that they're weird. But wouldn't the bell note naturally correspond to the classical music terminology? Only if, as I said, you regarded soprano fingerings as standard. But historically there's probably a stronger case for alto fingerings as sta...

Re: C Whistle - Transpose or Not

Fun counter example, and going back the OP, I've just learned that unlike most instrument families (whistles, flutes, pipes, clarinets, saxophones), recorders don't do this Yes, and no... so a Soprano recorder player will play X XXX OOO O and call it a G (full disclosure, I don't know recording fin...
