Re: My evolution as a whistle player, might help a newbie or two

Don't point the whistle straight down when playing. It can be angled but it should be closer to horizontal than vertical. Low whistles may require a more vertical position if you have shorter arms or fingers. But IMO fingering is more efficient, particularly in the early stages, and you don't have ...

Re: CP: Parks high whistles in black on the way

Not Black/Dubh anything, Knight or Onyx (all potentially treading on others' toes?) but, from the other suggestions so far, I'd maybe favour Ninja, Raven, Stealth or Shadow.

eBay: Yamaha AW16G Digital Audio Workstation SOLD

Selling on behalf of my school music department, and posted after confirming with MTGuru that it was OK to offer equipment of this nature here... Yamaha AW16G Digital Audio Workstation (multi-track recorder with built-in hard drive and CD-RW). Not the very latest equipment, but still a powerful tool...

Re: FS: Shaw (high) D, C, Bb whistles + Clarke C

Thinking I've maybe overpriced the Bb through not realising that the price jump from the current Cs to Bs and larger comes from a metal-lined windway (mine's still a nice one, but just with wood block), so willing to consider offers for any of these.

Re: WTB: Silberton descant recorder (Hopf etc.)

Probably not a WTB for regular 'bumping' when these seem to be quite rare beasts, but worth highlighting once more just now?

Re: 2-headed R&R just sold on eBay - oh, the times!

Why doesn't anyone attribute flute prices to - currency fluctuations? - market saturation (there seems to be more flute makers than ever)? - rising fuel costs and thus increased shipping costs? - Steve Jobs stepping down? - Lady GaGa outselling the Chieftains? - Justin Bieber's cosmetics? - The Tea...

Re: Getting a Dixon but having trouble choosing!

Firstly, the DX203 is now apparently the DX204 (with some unspecified tweaks accounting for the number change) Have just been talking to Tony Dixon on the phone and discovered it's actually a 203 they've sent me because the main 'tweak' was changing the longer head and shorter body to a short head ...

Re: all-metal whistles

Just thought of something... if you are still considering an Ethnicwinds model.... Nick might be able to work up a "distressed metal" look to it, some kind of "antiqueing" to give one of his whistles the period feel you're looking for.... What, like already an antique by the ear...

Re: Getting a Dixon but having trouble choosing!

The DX 203 is heavy and has a real sense of quality to it. Its clearly a more expensive whistle. The tuning slide is very nice and easy to use. The tone is purer as Dr Phill points out with a "cleaner"sound and less chiff. It takes a bit more blow to hit the higher octaves and it seems th...

Re: Developing finger dexterity & strength

One thing I thought about later is finger speed. I live in the slow lane and I can think of only one song where I had to develop speed to play well. Most songs requiring speedy playing are beyond my abilities and usually beyond my interests as well. Whereas I'd argue that slow tunes benefit from fa...

Re: Drones?

I hear some extra 'feature' when playing a D or E against that drone, but it has no apparent frequency, just a buzz. And I hear nothing with the G,A,B,C#. Think it's possible (just possible) that you're hearing difference tones (also described in that Wikipedia article), which are quite common in e...

Look, I'm really not wanting to argue about this, but DrPhill's question was apparently about drones in general and your nsp or lp isn't 'always'!
