Re: If you're a multi-instrument player & had to choose just 1?
I didn't realize hypothetical instruments would be an option. Oops... guess I started that with my trombone! But I might just go for a saxophone if it wasn't for that darn finger... If I had another instrument that was in tune, I could probably make some pan flutes and start from there. Could you n...

Re: Guitar Chord Symbols
Have they done what they have because it comes after an obviously D maj chord, and it's just a lazy shorthand for DΔ with a little 7 above it? I'd say practical/convenient rather than lazy when the major triad is normally understood from just the root letter, but still think Maj7 clearer than either.

Re: Guitar Chord Symbols
Thanks for the information. I don't have a good enough ear to listen and understand. From the notation only, I don't quite know what is going on in this measure: /|Em7 D C G |Am A7 D7/ As I am reading that, the 4/4 measure is equally divided in half and the D7 is probably getting two 1/2 beats. I h...

Re: If you're a multi-instrument player & had to choose just 1?
Hmmm... according to my website, 'I play recorder, whistle, flute, piano, accordion, guitar and bass fairly seriously, and a number of other instruments with varying degrees of incompetence.' So, because I love them all and can't really imagine cutting most of them out, I'm going to duck the questio...

Re: Guitar Chord Symbols
Is this particular to a certain country, language, or style of music? Mostly just standard variants, eg the triangle and M are both used for the major seventh (and sometimes unnecessarily for just the major triad), although I prefer Maj7 for clarity. Likewise the dots-and-slash thing is standard no...

Re: Guitar Chord Symbols
My guess would be a 1 bar rest. Aye, could be (and I'd considered it), but why specify '1' instead of just writing 'NC' when it couldn't exactly be multiple bars in there? (@DrPhill, think either the rest or the G should work if that's the case!) Either that, or an inverted T Chord. Strangely...

Re: Guitar Chord Symbols
A triangle is 'Major' right? Maj7 (ie G,B,D,F#). But what about the old style division sign (horizontal with two dots) Musical shorthand (in staff notation too) for 'same as the previous bar', but normally written with a slant like a % sign. or the horizontal with a vertical? Dunno, but I'd guess a...

Which surely makes them 'quality whistles' rather than 'glorified recorders'... and I'd still argue that 'glorified' is the wrong word regardless of context or taste!bogman wrote:Abell and Oz are obviously quality whistles

Why 'glorified', when whistles and recorders share so much but also have mutually exclusive attributes and sophistications?bogman wrote:Abell and Oz are just glorified recorders to me.

Re: B Whistle
I've suggested to Mike that the bit about the taper is confusing. if technically correct. Darn right! Like I said, 'they're highlighting it on their site like it's good for you' (causing me to ponder the possible benefits of what 'looks' like the invisible taper), and I'm not easily confused about ...

Re: B Whistle
They Kildares do have a small taper to the bore which I understand is necessary to release the body from the mold in manufacturing. It's not what I'd call noticeable to the player. Ah, that's interesting when they're highlighting it on their site like it's good for you ('Dublin models have a cylind...

Re: B Whistle
The Kelisheks have evolved their whistle bore designs over the years as they have grown their line of whistles. Originally they only made whistles in one bore size, what is now called the S-series bore. My recollection is that they started making whistles with 1/2" CPVC pipe (like many whistle...
