Re: My first Frula! :D

Looks nice :)

Is this an end blown instrument, where you blow across an edge instead of through a fipple? If so, then you may find some tips if you search for information about playing quena.

Choosing a Native American Flute

My Woodwind Acquisition Syndrome goes into remission sometimes, but never fully heals ;) I am starting to crave getting a NAF. Never having played a NAF, and only occasionally having listened to them (though enjoying those times!) ... what are some considerations in choosing one, as a total beginner...

Re: quena chin?

Yes it is. A shame since it is such a beautiful wood too. Ernest I know :( Well ... maybe get the best of both worlds? http://www.boliviamall.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=0&products_id=6699 http://www.boliviamall.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=0&products_id=11988 http://www.bolivi...

Re: quena chin?

I do think it is the materials. I have no problem with the bone mouthpieces, at all.

I will be donating the Jacaranda to a church auction ...

Re: quena chin?

I hate to say that i am developing this "quena chin". I have been playing only my wooden and bamboo quenas and blame the problem on sweating. I have this neat red ring on my chin. I am now taking care to only play indoors and in air condiitioned rooms. I wiped down the emboucher of my que...

Re: To thumbhole or not to thumbhole - that is the question!

I find myself playing 10-hole ocarinas more and more these days, and they have two thumbholes. Maybe somebody makes a whistle with a G# thumbhole as well as a Cnat one? Back in 1981 I saw a ten-hole plastic descant recorder in a shop in Istanbul (or actually 12-hole, the lowest two holes were split...

Re: To thumbhole or not to thumbhole - that is the question!

Quenas have thumbholes ... how much more traditional can you get? ;)

Not only for c-nat, but crack the thumbhole open a bit and you're in second octave, without even really overblowing (at least not enough to notice) ... works that way on the quena, anyway.

Re: Can you play a C song in D?

I get what you're saying but I'd still argue transposing in your head is an acquired skill that not everyone can master. I've known some musically talented people who have a difficult time pulling that off without making mistakes that should be obvious to them (I have stories). At any rate, until t...

Re: quena chin?

I shave daily with a straight blade so I can't say that there are any negative sides to shaving and playing a quena. Glad to hear you aren't having any problems :) Greg, if you ever think about unburdening yourself of your pvc quena give me a pm. I'd be glad to take it off your hands. Since it's wa...

Re: quena chin?

Well Greg, this experiment may be meaningless but I bought me a pvc quenaco from the guy on this thread, http://forums.chiffandfipple.com/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=83128 , to see if my skin reacts to pvc. of course the quenacho I bought is from South Africa and not Peru or pvc from your local area. ...

Re: quena chin?

Well, some success :)

I have some medical paper tape on hand, so I covered the contact portion of a PVC quena with a couple of layers. Been playing it for several days now, with no skin problems :)

'course, I don't want to mar the wooden one with that. But I'm better off than I was before :)

Re: Best tin whistle book

I found the Bill Ochs book "The Clarke Tin Whistle handbook" the most helpful, when I was completely new. Since you are not completely new, it may or may not be as helpful to you.

If nothing else, it had a nice selection of tunes.
