FS Cowhorn gemshorn in E
Gemshorn for sale, made from cowhorn. Tonic note is E and scale is pretty accurately an E major (according to my electronic tuner); a bit longer than 13". Wooden plug fitted, with channel to create fipple. Quiet, breathy sound. I am the original owner (not maker) and haven't played it for over ...

Re: How to season a Djura Gaida bag?
Having tied many a bag -- both sheep & goat -- onto my Macedonian gajda (as close to Bulgarian as makes no difference, when it comes to bags), I can tell you some useful experience. Water is OK BUT it also has the unwelcome side effect of encouraging things -- molds, fungi, bacteria & undesi...

Re: Hungarian and transylvanian flute construction diference
[Thread revival. - Mod] As a player of Transylvanian [Romanian, HUngarian] and Csángo & Moldavian fluier/furulya, I use several of these 6-hole fipple flutes, common keys these days being A and C, altho' one can find them in a variety of lengths. I like the brief summary Michael Loos posted abo...

Re: Anyone have experience with Tabor pipe? Question about k
I'm a tabor pipe player (with small drum that hangs on my L hand thanks to velcro-sewn-on leather straps). I have both C (an old Kelishek pipe from the mid-80s that is a gem) and many other pipes in D, metal and of various woods. I strongly suggest you consider trying an inexpensive metal pipe, e.g....

Re: Another Mystery Instrument
I have several of these. It is indeed a Serbian frula, one very common version of which involves the twisted copper wire for decorative purposes. Fipple on the underside/opposite side from fingerholes. Note that the fipple is close to the top of the end into which player blows, so that he or she can...

Double chanters -- Dalmatian mih
belatedly adding to the many posts about double-chantered pipes, I don't remember anyone mentioning the droneless 2-chanter mih played on the [Croatian] Dalmatian coast and in Bosnia (inland, across the mountains). There are some mouth-blown versions of same, too (very similar to those that are moun...

Bulgarian, Macedonia Gaida bags
Always be sure to keep it tightly wrapped in at least one plastic bag, prferably two, to that the bag dries out very, very slowly.

Bulgarian Kaba Gaida -- bag care
Yes -- be very careful where you put your gajda. I had one that a dog began chewing on (the drone only, thank goodness). I know they find the smell very attractive. As for treating a hard bag, well, you'll find many solutions. I've seen Bulgarian players pour white wine or rakija into the bag.. Afte...

Articulation/non-pitch-changing fingerings
There's a wind-instrument-specific fingering that I've seen and used on many instruments, though I'm having a hard time knowing how to describe it and name it. So, I'm seeking suggestions and comments from other pipers/kaval players/penny whistlers/flute players. Here's what's happening (using gajda...

Re: Gaita reeds in the US?
I may have a spare gaita reed from a set I bought a long time ago (with spare reed). It has languished unplayed for a while. Write to me off-list.

Bag covers for NSP
Has the subject of bag covers been visited here before? lately? What I've seen (from YouTube videos, as well as photos) is that for Northumbrian smallpipes, there's a tendency to choose solid colors. Maybe cotton velvet predominates? Any observations anybody?

Repair and adjustment of NSP set (unused for 15 years)
Apologies for possibly re-visiting a well-discussed topic, but here goes: I'm seeking recommendations/comments on where to send a nice 30-year-old 4-drone set of Burleigh Northumbrian smallpipes that have lain unplayed for at least 15 years. Chanter is really nice and plays well; drones leak excessi...

Re: FS - Northumbrian Smallpipe $950
Good morning, Tom. I've written to John Liestman to ask about the tuning question --playing your set in F rather than F#. Assuming that this is doable, can we proceed with negotiations, preferably off-list or by phone? I like the look of the set and everything that you write about it Does the price ...
