Re: Review of a Non-Standard Goldie Low D
Congratulations on your new whistle(s)! I know you've been on a quest for "the holy grail" for years, and I wasn't sure you were going to find what you were dreaming about, but it sounds like you found it! I'm very happy for you. And congratulations to the Goldies for coming up with a new ...

Re: Have you heard about this new concept low whistle ?
I have played flute and whistle. What I loved about flute was the control with the embauchure. I loved being able to play high notes (upper second octave) very quietly. Just focus the airstream. With the whistle one has to play loud to get upper 2nd octave. I really liked the flute embauchure but my...

Re: Playing Shakuhachi music with a whistle or simple flute
My apologies, I read the other Blowing Zen book and not the one that you posted. Well, you've encountered the most common problem with any form of spiritual practice. Quieting the mind. But I think the flute is a wonderful tool to work on your concentration skills. A meditation is really just focus...

Re: Playing Shakuhachi music with a whistle or simple flute
All that being said, you can apply all the principles of Zen to a NAF just as you can any art. One of the classic books is Zen and the ARt of ARchery. http://www.ideologic.org/files/Eugen_Herrigel_-_Zen_in_the_Art_of_Archery.pdf I liked it much better than Blowing Zen and it can be applied to any e...

Re: Playing Shakuhachi music with a whistle or simple flute
But I don't want to learn Shakuhachi. I'm frankly curious about that. Seems to me that the music and the instrument go pretty much hand-in-hand. I don't know about you, but if I were to attempt shakuhachi music on any other instrument, I'm pretty sure I would find the results to be less than, well,...

Re: Playing Shakuhachi music with a whistle or simple flute
The shakuhachi usually plays a minor pentatonic scale, usually in D: D F G A c d. To play that on whistle, you could half-hole the Fnats, or you could transpose up a tone: E G A B d e. Thanks for confirmation on that. This is what I do for the NAF. I have some NAF backing tracks (Jam Tracks) and th...

Re: The Mary Bergin Whistle Tutor
A little confusion here and probably my fault. No confusion at all, Mike (you were spot-on there)! when cutting a note following a different note, let's say B after A, and cut with C, I have played A bcB Yep, that's what Cotter calls the casadh. and not A cB which is what I imagine Mary will teach ...

Re: Whistle & Flute player considering learning violin
I have a slightly different belief: If I'm going to invest a lot of my valuable time learning an instrument, I want to have a good instrument. Not great or the best, but good. From what I've heard the Chinese have made huge progress with their violins. So an inexpensive one now is likely to be much ...

Re: Fiddle strings?
I've been using Pirastro Tonica because that's what my violin came with. That was 6 months ago and I've been playing 3-6 times week for 30-60 minutes. I'm not sure how to tell if they should be changed. I bought a spare set thinking I'd break some like I did with the guitar but so far no breaks. So ...

Re: overton flute
It does appear to be a real Overton Well, please read Colin Goldie's upthread comments carefully. But yes, it is a curiosity. Colin said that Bernard didn't sell flutes. But is it possible that this flute was a prototype of some sort that wasn't sold publicly? I'm sure it'll go for more than it's w...

Re: overton flute
I saw that on ebay too and came here to see if anyone was discussing it. It does appear to be a real Overton and the story of it being a prototype seems plausible. I am not interested in buying it myself but I'm curious how much it will go for and would like to know more about the history of it.

I will also recommend a delrin from Dave Copley. I got mine about 1 year ago and I absolutely love it. So much that I have no desire to "upgrade" to wood, although I may eventually want to get a keyed model. It's easy to play and sounds good. I too considered cheaper options such as the Di...

Re: Bamboo Flute Q's: Barna Gabos, Embouchure, Bansuri
Bansuri just means bamboo flute. I am not sure how you make a distinction between bansuri and "regular" bamboo flutes. It depends very much on the maker what design characteristics and quality you may encounter in a bansuri. .... But a "C" bansuri (bottom note is "C") ...
