Re: Concertina is calling me

I'm scoping for an instrument that's at at the right cost/quality junction for me I know people say this for many instruments but concertina is one where I think "buy the most expensive instrument you can afford" really applies. I got my first concertina to play Irish music and started wi...

The pipes are nothing out of the ordinary but I'm happy to finally start the journey :)

Re: Tenor banjo: Chicago Tuning

I agree with Bigsciota about not trying to play chords at your first session using a Chicago tuned tenor, but if you wanted to play melodies on it I don't see that as an issue. You probably won't sound like those playing in GDAE but there are a few benefits to playing melody on a Chicago tuned tenor...

Sharp Sets

Do people make chanters in Eb? I know there are a few modern records of Irish music with the tunes tuned up half a step but I'm not sure of a piper playing on a recording tuned up to Eb. I imagine with the flat sets being fairly common that it would be possible to make a chanter in Eb. The holes wou...

Looks like this post is nearly 10 years old now. Did anything come of it? Are there any Philadelphia Pipe Clubs that any one knows of?

Re: Waiting for Delivery

Thanks for the tips!

Any solo albums you can recommend? I have a few Planxty, Cheiftains and Lúnasa albums along with 2 Cillian Vallely albums (including the duo he did with his brother) but I don't know of much that is just solo piping.

Waiting for Delivery

Hello, I just ordered a practice set of pipes from David Daye. It'll be a few months until they come so I was wondering what would be the best use of my time to make starting on the pipes easier. I have been playing Irish trad on accordion for a little over 6 years now and know a few tunes. I also h...

Re: Pictures of Your Pipes

I have no pictures of my pipes as they haven't been built yet, but they've been ordered. I didn't see a better place to post this so feel free to delete it but I'm happy to finally be dipping my toes into the world of piping. If you were wondering, I ordered a practice set from David Daye and am hop...

Re: Saltarelle Le Bouebe versus Saltarelle Irish Bouebe

The only difference I'm aware of is that the Irish one has a flat keyboard where the "le bouebe" is an open, stepped keyboard.

Re: where to look for an Irish accordion

Where are you located?

In the USA www.buttonbox.com is really good. In the UK and Ireland there are loads. Try www.melodeon.net for more information plus people there often sell new/used ones and might have something you're looking for

Thanks for the advice! I'll keep at the tinwhistle then until I'm ready for a UP practice set.

Re: Practice chanter

I think an eminently sufficient mouthblown analog to the uilleann pipe chanter would be called ... a tinwhistle. Much cheaper, too, I bet! :-) Seriously, the fingering differences between a tinwhistle and a pipe chanter aren't enough to cause major problems, so get yourself a B, Bb or A whistle and...
