FWIW , I once played a wooden D flute with an octaganal, tapered bore . It was a display piece in Kelischek's { Susato } display room . I was not impressed with that instrument , but that alone doesn't doesn't mean it couldn't be done. I will however, remain skeptical of the physics until someone wi...

Where to upload a WW2 biography to the web

Does anyone know where I could upload the stories written by a B24 crewmember from the second world war? They could conceivably be of use to anyone interested in the stories the veterans of that era. Currently I've copied the typewritten pages to disk and they occupy about 60 meg. I suspect that I w...

James Galway's Whistles ???

While listening to Sir James playing " Belfast Hornpipe " on a CD I got to wondering what make of whistle he might prefer. I assume that he has been known to play more than one brand but if anyone knows, I am curious.

My mother-in-law uses a color scanner to scan fresh flowers . She then cuts out each flower or leaf { ferns work well } with embroidry scissors and then arranges the cut-outs into suitable arrangements for color scanning again, to suitable card stock for one of a kind greeting cards. The joys of fre...

Don and Barry, Thanks for the input. That's the kind of info I was looking for. I like the Aulos for some "period" pieces and some modern stuff while I like the larger holed flutes for the more Trad music. Slow songs and airs sometimes are more poignant on a large diameter, large hole flute...

Why does a small hole flute seem like a sports car?

For the last year or so I've felt that when I'm playing a small holed Aulos that it's like driving a sports car compared to playing a large holed flute like my Tipple, which is more like a Cadillac. I don't have any more trouble playing the Tipple, it's just that the "feel" is distinctly d...

Recording- DVR to to computer?

While messing around in my "mad scientist underground lab " last nite I noticed my digital voice recorder laying next to one of the computers and wondered what would happen if one was connected to the other. The DVR works acceptably for recording flute. OK for recording practice sessions f...

A cure for bee and wasp stings

About 25 years ago I was told that Adolph's Unflavored Meat Tenderizer would stop the pain and swelling of bee stings .It does for me and the few people I know who have tried it . It turns the pain off instantly, like switching off a light . The next day it itches sort of like a mesquito bite . Work...

Where to "try out" flutes in Portlland Or.

I'm going to be visiting family in downtown Portland about the first of June . Are there any music stores there that would allow a few test tunes on simple system or baroque instruments? Can't do sessions , can't tolerate tobacco smoke . Too bad, there seems to be several sessions a week in the loca...

Some will be driven to "prove" God exists by quoteing scripture that re-enforces their belief system . Others will use layered levels of logic to reach one conclusion or the other. If you believe God exists anyone elses "proofs" are unlikely to sway you. If you don't believe God ...

I can't help on the Sweet, but I thought that I'd mention that G# can be cross fingered quite well on a small holed Aulos traverso. Also ,I've found G# easy to half hole on large diameter large hole cylindrical flutes like the Tipple or with somewhat more effort an Olwell bamboo.
