OT: Stephen Foster played flute...

According to oldflutes.com/american , Stephen Foster owned and played a Firth & Pond flute. That may explain why some of his songs seem to work so well on a simple flute."Sweet Little Maid of the Mountain" , "Slumber My Darling" , "For Thee Love" , " Gentle Ann...

The fingering chart that comes with the Aulos shows extensive venting with the Eb key but because of inherent laziness I usually play with it closed . With my low-fi ears there is rarely a need for me to improve intonation by venting. Others may find it preferable. The only song I regularly use the ...

In the early fourth century when the present canon was being decided upon the "Revelation of John " nearly didn't make into the authorized list according to early church history. Now , go find out why.

Twenty years ago I used a horse{male} mule to skid small trees for our families firewood. Before he was "cut" {castrated, for you sidewalk type folks} he was too dangerous work near if he wasn't tied,or on the far side of an electric fence. Two months after being cut he lost enough of his ...

Have you tried cross fingering and half holeing the flute you have . Even with a traverso the cross fingerings and half holing will take time to get solid on.Some notes are easier than others. An A# or F# works equally well on the Aulos as the M&E R&R. I find a G# possible on all my flutes b...

Thanks Doug, you've confirmed some of the reservations I've had about moving to a medium I've no exact copy of. I suspected it would take at least several attempts to get an acceptable design { if that's even possible in brass }. It's a good thing I enjoy the pursuit of an idea as well as the destin...

Thanks Byron, yeah it is fun to play with and I will probably try to find time to build a pvc flute using the measurements it provides but when I plug in the measurements from my Tipple the results of the program don't match the reality that we know works. Not to say that it wouldn't work if actuall...

building flutes- inside dia. vs tuning

Having built several very successful pvc flutes usung 3/4 diameter schedule 40 pvc I now have chance to make one of brass tubing that has the same outer dia. as the pvc {1.10 in. } but the brass has an inner dia. {.88 in. } that is greater than the pvc {.82 in. }. This of course is due to the brass ...

Eldarion and Cathy make some very good points. Midi files are not a good thing to emulate. But they are a very quick way to access a lot different material. Eldarion's point about playing by ear is well made , however , not everyone is equally gifted in the auditory department. My brain is wired so t...

Hints for the solo player

For whatever reason, some of us can't or don't wanna play in a group .While messing with some of the midi sites I found that I could play along with the midi and quite a few , though not all, were in tune with my flute. It didn't take long to see why one would advance their skills faster if a group ...

Before I glued it down so I wouldn't lose it. I dropped the wedge down the bore of the only other cylindrical flute I had of about the same diameter. a bamboo Olwell. Not surprisingly, it muddied the the tone. I don't know what if anything could improve an Olwell bamboo flute . On the other hand, th...

As per Doug's suggestion I put a stopper in the end of my M&E R&R and it played fine, with maybe a small change in the upper octave. But with my low fidelity ears I can't be sure. Sort of explains how walking stick flutes work.
