Re: quena chin?
Greg...if you sand it, you will alter the blowing angle and increase turbulence. If yours is lacquered, the chemicals or if, it, is insect based lacquer will be sufficient as an irritant. You.d best try some antihistamine and stop in case your mouth/tongue swells and blocks the airway, since you are...

Re: Flute Market Polling
I do sympathise with the small indie craftsman and artisan, who has the odds stacked up against him/her in an increasingly commercialised market. Equally ...it's a good point: if a flute has lasted since 1867, and is a brilliant flute...with over 134 years of reputation behind it ... what hope has a...

Can't you use one of the flexible light rods to see in the dark if it is leaking?

Re: the microphone and your low D whistle
Can anyone whose got a Shure SM57 say whether it falls short of the ones discussed here, or is it a worthwhile alternative? 57's stink for woodwinds, James. but, as has been suggested above, thats just my 'novice' opinon  I have never been satisfied with them. Snare, cello, marimba, harpsicho...

Wow. If you've got two McGee flutes, your quest is over.
I really love the sound of these flutes.

Re: How many flutes?
Ah, FLOA, eh? I wonder if it's possible to be affllicted with nach PFLOOA? Certainly. BTW, we used to call the general condition FARDS (Flute Acquisition Regulatory Deficit Syndrome, IIRC) for a while around here but the discussion hasn't seen the light of day for a while, so the term was forgotten...

Re: McCarty Unofficial Tour-Flute Review Thread
Thanks for clearing up the black mark issues on the tone holes/embouchure cut Jem. These don't exist on my McCarty flute. The problem with test driving a second hand flute, is that it's not easy to tell what came with it, and what was acquired during its ownership. The silent crack in the joint, is ...

Re: Wait times for recently acquired flutes
I presume 'recent' means acquired within the past 300 years :D I acquired a Rudall Carte Rockstro flute. I didn't have to wait for it, since it has been around since the last century when it was made, probably at least 1930s. Maybe Casey is referring to just newly manufactured flutes from flutemaker...

I tend to think along similar lines although instead of 'maybe just one other', it's 'maybe just one more'.

Re: My latest eBay Flute
That looks really beautiful Jon!
I bought one off a fabulous member on the forum here. It's not as pretty as yours, but it makes a beautiful sound.
Was it hard to get a replacement head for it?
Ivory is banned in parts of the world like where I live lol.

Re: McCarty Unofficial Tour-Flute Review Thread
Great review Jem  In the second clip you can see what I’m playing. On each flute I rattle through the same couple of reels (The Maid of Mount Kisco/The Musical Priest – chosen because they are in different modes) and then do a little improvised pseudo-slow air fragment (except I forgot with the...

Re: How might a crumbly head cork affect tone?
I had a former flute teacher who was old and crumbly. It made him sound bitter, curmudgeonly and rather thin on the ground. I suspect that if your head cork is this, way, it will sound the same. Nothing is better than getting it replaced. There's no point in enduring bad relationships with things wh...
