Re: Blowing machine

I have learned that electrical analogies only get you so far in this more dimensional world. That's why I was surprised to find that adding some tubing (resistance) after the calibrator didn't increase the pressure (voltage) as I expected. Because it allowed the partial vacuum to form in that tubin...

Re: Blowing machine

I'd say the pressure doesn't vary consistently with air speed squared until above 200 Pa (20 mm H2O), and when it does, there's an offset of 60 to 100 Pa, depending on the recorder: P = m * v^2 + offset. That's puzzling me. Bernoulli's equation doesn't have a constant. Even if the the pressure does...

Is that rhotic /r/ or non-rhotic?

Re: Blowing machine

I concentrated on looking directly down the windway, seeing equal amounts of ceiling and floor. And made easier by placing something of contrasting colour beyond the head. Mellow D: All ramp Feadog Mk 1: All ramp Killarney: All ramp Old Gen: 2/3 ramp, 1/3 through. Newer (but probably still fairly o...

Re: Blowing machine

So I've been puzzling why, after accounting for differences in the windway geometry, the flow-pressure relationship of the Feadog looks like that of the calibrators without any tubing below the exit, and the other whistles look more like the calibrators with tubing below the exit. I have a Feadog Mk...

Re: Blowing machine

Blowing pressure and flow for a consort of recorders. Data from Blanc and others 2010. Above 25 Pa (~2.5mm H2O) there is a pretty good square law relationship, with some departures that may be of interest. Excluding the zero point straight line fits of Q vs sqrt(P) have intercepts on the sqrt(Pa) a...

Re: Blowing machine

Hmmmm, now here's a question. With conical flutes and piccolos, we see a cylindrical section for the top third or so (primarily the head and slide), then the cone tapering down through the body, and then a terminal flare in the foot. But looking at tapered whistles like the Clarke, the taper seems ...

Re: Blowing machine

. . . so expect more pressure. But we saw a drop. . . Fair question, if the flow was exactly the same with+without the 35mm extension. But, how do you know the flows were exactly the same ? Of course, they were *not* exactly the same. But, to what degree were they different ? A half-diameter of the...

Re: Blowing machine

Here's hoping Tunborough hasn't already done this. Blowing pressure and flow for a consort of recorders. Data from Blanc and others 2010. ... And no, I didn't measure them all off with a ruler. This is terrific, David. I started to pick out a few points, but this is far beyond what I could do. I'll...

Re: Blowing machine

Calibrators followed by 130 mm tubing: Ke = 0.12 Is all the calibrators giving the same Ke? So you have the pressure loss down a calibrator modelled adequately? I may have missed that earlier. Yes, the "known" parameters Kb and Kdw, mostly Kdw, are sufficient to model the differences betw...

Re: Blowing machine

With the flowmeter below the 30 x 4 calibrator, the pressure/flow relationship was pretty much entirely explained by Bernoulli and pressure loss through the calibrator. With the calibrators opening directly to air, it took an adjustment of Ke = 0.35 or so to get the flow/pressure relationship to lin...

Re: Blowing machine

I'll wait till I hear your interpretation of the above before doing anything more! I'd still like to see results from other calibrators with the longer tubing downstream of them, to see if they also line up the way the 30 x 4 calibrator does. After the dust settles from St. Patrick's Day, of course...

Re: Blowing machine

I cut another 40mm piece of 13.3mm tubing, but in this one, I tapped a hole 5mm in from the Calibrator end and screwed in a PTO spigot. So when I push it on to the Calibrator the spigot will commune with the air around the output of the Calibrator. I'll call it "LPTO + 35mm tube". So star...

Re: Blowing machine

Also (sorry to keep coming back to it) if we form an embouchure with our lips much of the pressure drop is in our lips. Even without deliberate shaping the contribution to resistance at the windway entrance may depend on how a player places their lips. It is a bit unexpected, but the measurements w...
