Re: 2 Row Diatonic Button Box / But Which Key?

If you buy a half-tone box (ie B/C or similar) check out the bass layout or you'll find that you can't play basses for most tunes except those in it's home keys.

Re: Can anyone tell me anything about this accordion?

It's almost certainly a very simple Garmon which can be either Uni- or bisonoric (ie one note or two notes per button). It's a native Russian squeezebox.

Re: TOO wide handrails

Undo the screws holding that end on and have a look. My best guess would be glue but you never know, you might see screw heads are nail heads on the reverse side. Only way to find out is to look. Either way you can still take out the offending piece of wood and add a new screw in neccesary but you w...

Re: F whistle tunes

What kind of music are you wanting to play? I have assorted Israeli and Balkan Tunes in F, Bb and associated keys. Likewise there are a lot of tune in Aird and other earlier collections in these keys. If however you want to play standard session tunes in a session then either you have a lot of cross...

Re: Standard tempos for jigs, reels and hornpipes?

Flute for the Feis is one thing. if you play for sets, it's quite a different one. Just saying, there's more than one way to skin a cat. True, and sessions are another way of skinning the same cat :) . However listening to music played for a specific purpose (and there's some superb music for sets ...

Re: Standard tempos for jigs, reels and hornpipes?

My teacher played for the dance so I tend to play a bit slower. If you can get hold of a copy of John Doonan "Flute for the Feis" it's well worth a listen as a starting point. PM if you have problems finding it.

Re: Why are Irish sessions so fraught?

Apologies, it was not intended as troll bait, but was based on experience. Way back when I was trying to learn I had players telling me to have lessons or find a teacher. When I asked them for lessons they almost invariably replied "I don't do that". Fine, so who was I meant to go to? I wa...

Re: Why are Irish sessions so fraught?

Out of interest, how many of those suggesting lessons and finding a teacher actually teach?

Check out the local car-boot sales, it'll probably be on for a tenner.

It's what happened to my Anglo!

I totally agree, I have no problem at all with paying a fair price for a quality instrument.

They also have a fairly clear idea of what they're worth. The purchasers will be getting wonderful boxes but not at a bargain price.

Re: Sheet music--where to find...

It's also worth pointing out that if you learn tunes from a session or single source you'll probably be playing them "wrong" at another session in another area. Personally I use a combination of notes and listening to learn tunes and then apply my years of listening to ITM to make the necc...

Re: Poll: How do you learn Irish traditional tunes?

Many years ago I had a few lessons with a fine Irish Fiddler, Pat Nealy who lived near Grimsby. He played for the Feis and instilled in me tempo and rhythm.

These days I use a combination of ABC files, recordings and notation and then apply the lessons that Pat taught me all those years ago.

Re: introductions of participating box players

Hi, I'm Steve and none of my boxes appear on the list :) I play (to various degrees of incompetence) a Dino Baffetti D/G, an Alfred Arnold 126 Bandoneon and (my latest acquisition) a Bernard Loffet G/C Pro 2+6. I've played assorted instruments (including also guitar, bass, mandolin and whistle) for ...
