Re: Olivewood

I received a 6-key narrow-bore R & R model flute made in olivewood by Steffen Gabriel last summer, and I absolutely love it. Previously I'd only ever played big, chunky Pratten-style flutes made from blackwood. My last flute in particular sounded great but weighed a ton. The new olivewood flute ...

Re: Lir whistles

Huh... I'm just seeing this now. I ordered a Bb and a C whistle from them a couple of weeks ago and received them in the Western US a little more than a week later along with a nice thank-you note. I'm mostly a piper and flute player and don't play whistles much these days, but I like a good C whist...

Re: Wenge Wood

In my other musical life playing Turkish oud, wenge is a very popular wood among Turkish luthiers for the strips used in oud bowls and necks. Looks lovely on its own or alternated with another wood like maple or padauk. It's also used by some Greek bouzouki makers for the fingerboards of their cheap...

Re: New player interested in NSP

There's already been a lot of good advice written here, so I'll try not to repeat too much. Apologies if I do. So, like many of the other people who have responded, I do not play the NSP myself--yet. I've played Scottish GHB and SSP since the mid-90s and uilleann pipes for about 20 years (with some ...

FS: Left-Handed Gordon Galloway Chanter w/4 Keys

I'm selling my Gordon Galloway chanter made from boxwood with ebony mounts and brass keys and rings. I've played it since 2007, and it has served me very well. You can hear this chanter on all the recordings of me playing uilleann pipes on my Soundcloud page. https://soundcloud.com/channing-dodson P...

Re: How old are your reeds?

My drone reeds are the original ones that Cillian Ó Bríain made when I got my drones from him 20 years ago. I've been playing Bruce Childress's synthetic reeds in my regulators for almost two years or so; I suspect they'll last a very, very long time. I played a Brad Angus reed in my Galloway chante...

Re: Quiet, 2 octave pipes...suitable for ITM

I have to be uncharacteristically blunt here: if pastoral pipes were so well-suited for ITM, then a hell of a lot more people would be playing and making them. That's not to say that they _can't_ be used for ITM or that they don't sound nice when used for ITM (or other music for that matter), but th...

Drone stock placement on the bag

Greetings, fellow ulcerative pipers! (Damn you, autocorrect!) I hope you're all enjoying your piping in the midst of all our varied crises lately. I haven't been active on the forum much lately, but I figured the time has once again come to consult the uilleann hivemind. I've played uilleann pipes o...

Re: Bernolin traverso-Rottenburgh or Delusse+Palanca embouch

I play lefty and am fortunate to have a 6-key Stéphane Morvan flute that I picked up from used from Erwan Menguy a few years ago. Even used, it wasn't at all cheap. I was lucky to be relatively flush with cash at that particular moment. Not sure when that'll be the case again... Some flute makers ch...

Re: For sell: Cocus wood Morvan (left handed)

For what it's worth, I purchased an older one of Erwan's Morvan flutes a few years ago, and it's an incredible flute. Astonishingly powerful, rock-solid bottom D, plays easily up to a 3rd-octave g (perhaps even higher, but that's as high as I dare go.) I was just playing it an hour ago, and I still ...

Re: McCallum getting into uilleann making

Just spoke with a local woman last night who picked up a recently-made McCallum practice set that he had with him at his annual smallpipes workshop in Mt. Vernon. So yes, he and McCallum are still at it though at this point it appears it is still one of Fred & McCallum's side-hustles, so to spea...

Re: Tone quality in O'Briain chanter?

But if you ever have the chance to play an Ó Briain chanter, play a back D and then lift your bottom hand pinkie finger for vibrato. The quality of sound is pretty unique. Tried that on mine, but didn't think it sounded better than bottom hand first finger vibrato. No, I wouldn't say better either,...

Re: Tone quality in O'Briain chanter?

Ó Briain chanters do seem to have something about them that sticks out just a wee bit. I often can't ID anyone else's CP stuff, but I'm often able to correctly guess if a chanter is one of Cillian's. (I played one myself for a number of years.) His reed design may be part of it along with his partic...
