Re: Trouble Deciding Which Instrument to Pick Up

STL Ocarinas is now offering an extended-range triple instrument in plastic Unfortunately it's not a good instrument, especially for the money, IMO. Ocarinas work best if you live with their limited range - a single-chamber ocarina has a wider range than a bagpipe, and there's plenty of repertoire ...

Re: a ornament named “shake”?

"Shake" is a standard term for "trill" in 18th century books.

Are you doing early music?

Re: Tin Whistle 2 Octaves Lower?

Didn't sell at their starting price of 1025 pounds so they've relisted it at the same price.

Odd behaviour but it's worth that much.

Two Scottish unaccompanied versions: http://www.tobarandualchais.co.uk/en/fullrecord/67197/2 http://www.tobarandualchais.co.uk/en/fullrecord/82632/4 Stanley Robertson's way of doing it may sound extraordinarily slow, but when you heard him sing in person he could be absolutely hypnotic and you wante...

Re: Tin Whistle 2 Octaves Lower?

I have a greatbass recorder. Works pretty well but I bought it 30 years ago and you wouldn't want to pay what it costs now. I can play it up to hornpipe speed but getting jigs and reels out of it with any style is pretty difficult, the keys have a lot of travel to slow you down. Louder, lighter, goi...

Just to be clear, I was in no way disagreeing with anything Harry was quoted as saying. Good common sense.

Does he still pay visits to sessions? If so, where and when?

I don't have the book, but Sullivan's has that range.

If that isn't it, post the beginning in ABC?

Re: Shoulder Stuff....

The problem with dystonias is that you can get irreversible damage before you realize what's happening to you. "Experimenting" will work for some, others will not be so lucky. If you intend to push your body into doing very unnatural things, you really need to be monitored regularly by som...

Re: Shoulder Stuff....

Doesn't this make you more likely to develop neck and shoulder dystonias?

Do people who use that playing position do a lot of exercises to compensate?

Re: Longshot Name That Tune

Does anyone know anything more about the tune that Planxty used for it? If you mean this, from that Australian group:: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iu6EvV2Hidg it seems to be a speeded-up folk-rock version of "Macpherson's Farewell". No reason why the tune shouldn't work if it was sung ...

Re: Words from Harry Bradley

I have used mikes that work far enough away to lose all the breath noise. I know it can be done. Close-miking flutes is completely unnecessary - I guess it's a practice started by the rock music business, since you don't have much option with a loud stage rig. Solo flute in a silent room is as far a...

Re: Words from Harry Bradley

Listened to the jig clip and liked that a lot more. I also realized I'd have liked both clips a lot more if I hadn't been listening to them from two inches away from Bradley's mouth. Why the hell do sound engineers do that? It puts the listener closer to the source of the breath noise than even the ...

Re: Words from Harry Bradley

Remember that Mr. Campin had never heard of Planxty either, and he referred to Liam O'Flynn's playing and arrangement as "dimwitted". Of course I've heard of Planxty. (I haven't listened to them very much since the time when their records first came out, though, and I doubt I could ever h...

Re: You know you've been playing wire harp too long...

You use fishing line for the melody strings on an Afghan rubab (and probably a sarod, which is almost the same thing).
