Re: rock classical

Hi Chas, There are several fragments of pieces in The Thoughts of Emerlist Davjack by the Nice. There might even be more extended workouts on earlier albums; that was Emerson's thing from early on. Despite a reasonable albeit somewhat fragmentary knowledge of prog right down to recent albums, I can'...

Vale Hurricane Higgins

Things won't be quite the same without Hurricane Higgins around, not that I'd heard news of him in a decade or three. One of perhaps only two snooker players whose death won't prompt me to wonder what made him famous.

For those who don't know the legend, google, marvel and boggle.

One for the Pundits

Why do we cringe when someone produces a string of puns?

It doesn't seem to matter whether the puns are individually good, bad or indifferent. Or does it?

I don't know what's redeeming about this one...other than the fact it has a good beat and is totally fun to dance to. Other than that, it's just a really weird song....if you think about it. Mack the Knife I suppose the redeeming feature might be that hardly anybody knows where it's from and what i...

Re: Movies that are better than the book

Since the demise of Classic Comics/Classics Illustrated it's been hard to find a book that's better than the movie.

Better look carefully in future at products that instruct you to apply liberally once per annum. And as for paying per anum, it's usually safer to continue paying through the nose.

Re: Hank Jones, jazz pianist rip.

A sad loss. Jones was one of the best. Even if you have no interest in jazz as such, you will very likely enjoy his series of duets with Charlie Haden on old gospel tunes and spirituals: Steal Away Simple, powerful and as deep as it gets. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41H76MQET5L._SL500_AA30...

Re: Lebanon/Israel Hummus Rivalry

I am disappointed that the Hibernian tradition of chickpea dips was given less than short shrift, and a great and varied tradition it is: you have the solidly time-honored Hummus of Bandon, the Hummus of Ballyloughlin, the Hummus of Carrigaholt - to name but a few - and the mack-daddy of them all, ...

Re: Something I did not know-A thread by Dale Wisely

Perhaps my impression was more toward the physicality of the two performances. After the extreme primal athleticism of Brown, Jagger seemed a bit tepid. Almost wobbly. Like comparing apples and marshmallows? In the day, I preferred the Stones to James Brown. Seeing old performances is fascinating. ...
