Re: The Saxinet ("Backpack Sax")
Duncan, what's the difference between the Saxinet and your Highland Hornpipe? As I understand it's the fingering and market positioning.

Re: Considering xaphoon...
The xaphoon is chromatic but has a "non-intuitive" fingering system, i.e. you can play D E G A B on the whistle, sax, really most woodwinds (probably ocarina), with the same fingers, but not on the xaphoon. A similar instrument is the "Highland Hornpipe". I have one, and I can't ...

Re: Periodic rant about English
In Russian we have da net naverno which is "well, probably no(t)", but is considered funny because this answer literally means "yes no maybe"!weedie wrote:A new one, which is a favourite of footy players is.."Yeah,no,look" .... ..

Re: Fiddle bow "scratch triplets" on flute?
I play a short roll {B}G{F}G or a double tongued triplet thing "t"G/"k"G/"t"G (1/16, 1/16, 1/8 with "t-k-t" articulation). Tried Grey Larsen's double cut roll some time ago.

Re: Please explain church
I come from a country with an "ominous latin chanting" kind of church :) I'm curious what country that is... Are you willing to part with that information? I live in Russia, most of the people here identify with the Eastern Orthodox Church, although as it is a post-Soviet country, church ...

Re: Please explain church
Fascinating answers so far, thanks everyone! Sorry if my comments about people socializing (musically or otherwise) in church seemed offensive. I respect religion and used to be religious myself. Didn't anticipate this In England, about 250 years ago, it was common for the village band to supply mus...

Please explain church
From reading this forum it seems one of the most common uses of whistles (or even pipes!) is playing in church. I come from a country with an "ominous latin chanting" kind of church :) and I presume that's a US thing. Please explain. Do Protestant churches have music with keyboards, guitar...

Re: Gaita vs Gaida
Yuri, I was going to write about Indo-European and Afro-Asiatic contact but then came across Wikipedia: The distinctive name [of the N. African ghaita/rhaita] owes to a medieval Gothic-Iberian influence.[1][2] In southern Iberia, various sorts of wind instruments, including the related shawm, are kn...

Re: Gaita vs Gaida
Seeing that other Slavic bagpipes are sometimes named koza, koziol (goat); the English/Germanic word goat comes from gaitaz, Gothic gaits; the Goths were seein both in Spain and in Eastern Europe; and bagpipe-making does include goats ... I'd bet on that.

Re: Posting clips
Nice one. Love the tone of your flute. What make is it? Arbo Thanks! Here's the Brosna slide if you missed it :). The flute is a McGee Grey Larsen Preferred (a small holed model), and you can judge which part of the sound is the flute and which is me by this clip: http://yadi.sk/d/HcEIZFyk24buW Gre...
