I wonder if this (membrane pipes) is possible only with modern plastic materials. Or else why hasn't anyone come up with this simple alternative to reeds before.

Recorders are fully chromatic but have a more complicated fingering than whistles. For a large variety of music recorders may be better. They also sound different in case you didn't notice :). The soprano recorder is comparable to a high D whistle and the tenor to a low D, however for solos the most...

Race comes from raza or something similar, space from spatium. E.g. an s-sound versus a t-sound.
