Re: Mic for whistle on stage
The best people to answer this are good professional sound engineers. SM58 is almost always their top choice, if you look on youtube for good whistle players playing concerts you'll see it's usually a 58. I personally use a beta 57a as that's what the sound engineer for a touring band I play with pr...

Re: Chieftain Custom Low D review
I would have to agree with all the points made by pancelticpiper above. The tonal centre of each note on any whistle is fixed. The micro dynamics come from the skill of the player in how long they take to reach the tonal centre and decay from it. The physics of a whistle mean if you play every note ...

Re: Goldie low d
Yes, I agree Sedi, best next move is addressing the clogging. - making sure the windway and blade are regularly cleaned and practising playing with a drier mouth in particular. Few would argue the Goldie is a better all round whistle but it'll likely be more prone to operator error!

Re: Goldie low d
Clogging is a user issue not a whistle issue, except maybe in extreme cases.

Colin used to make non-tunable, but why would you not want a tunable?

Re: Advise on Border pipes maker in Europe
Probably the makers most popular with top players are Hamish Moore - long waiting list, Nigel Richard (Garvie) - not making any more but frequently come up second hand at very good prices, Fred Morrison (McCallum) - easier to get but not as popular with top players as the above two.

Re: Fingering for G# on a D whistle
I use XXO XXX on my Goldies all the time and it gives a good G# in the first octave. I prefer half holing the second octave though.

Re: Flute tuning problem. Please Help!
PanCelticPiper, I did say that they are useful for finding a starting pitch like G or A. In my personal opinion, rather than using tuners and metronomes to practise pitch or timing it's much more useful to play along with recordings of top players. At least that way you're practicing pitch, timing, ...

Re: Great music before great piping
Learning the rudiments has got nothing whatsoever to do with "impressing other pipers". It's about laying down proper foundations in order to give you the opportunity to play great music. This is a common lazy mans excuse. The rudiments of pipes have been developed and refined for centurie...

Re: Flute tuning problem. Please Help!
In my opinion, digital tuners are relatively useless for flute and tin whistle players, other than the most experienced players, who don't generally need a tuner in the first place. Given that there can be so much variation in pitch as a result of how hard you blow, how you blow, or your embouchure,...

Re: Home made key for a Low D whistle?
I would forget gimmicks like clip on keys. The pinky is easy. If you think of Uilleann pipes, D in all fingers down, E is raising the pinky and ring finger. The low whistle can be played exactly the same way and this method completely eliminates any stretch.

Re: How to clean the mouthpiece of my whistle?
lassoftheisland, yes use water to rinse it out. It's the method Colin Goldie recommends and I've used for years. Water won't harm the whistle. The musky smell will disappear. It's a good idea to keep alloy whistle windways as clean as possible. They play best that way. Toothpaste is ideal. Putting th...
