Re: How is the body formed in Copeland style taper bore whistles
Haven't seen a Copeland whistle with a joined seam and I don't know the process he used. I would bet the process is one of a base diameter round tubing being annealed and drawn through a (carbide) die. I have experience with this process reforming brass cartridge cases using a parent case having the...

Re: I can't seem to learn tunes by sheet music..
Myself, I'm not so musical. I've always loved music and get great satisfaction from my whistles but honestly I have minimal natural aptitude for playing. Taught myself to read music which in-turn allows me to generate a bit of muscle memory when fleshing out a tune. Once I can fluidly move through t...

Re: Making whistles out of Bubinga (wood treatment ?)
We should distinguish between raw linseed oil and "boiled" linseed oil, which has been through a heat treatment process to start the polymerization. Although I don't have experience with it, I gather boiled linseed oil will harden.
I believe you will also find that BLO will...

Re: Making whistles out of Bubinga (wood treatment ?)
Acknowledging that linseed oil has been used as a wood finish for hundreds of years, I would like to point out that in its unaltered form it never really dries or hardens. So, just a heads up if you are not experienced with linseed oil's use. Respectfully, tim

Mike,
Took me a while to figure it out, but what helped me to easily get a good seal at speed was to condition my fingers / hands with lotion before playing. tim

Pancelticpiper thank you for your comparison, a very enjoyable read. I am left wondering if possibly you meant to refer to the "Chieftain" tour whistle rather than "Overton" in your closing statement?

Re: Bracker Whistles on YouTube
Hans, well done! What a nice personal way to represent your whistles. I realize that your web site offers sound clips, but I would encourage you to offer a Youtube video for every whistle key you build. IMO this is a great selling tool.....has got it all, the whistles, the maker and the sound....smi...

Re: What's this brass Low D?
Mike, An OS low D Chieftain that I have could be described as having fairly low back pressure. I would describe it as a easy blower that takes a bit of air. This pipe gives good latitude with regards to being able to push each note before breaking octaves. Also having a clean breaking separation bet...

Re: Learning Tunes by Ear
bogman, your point on learning at tune speed is well taken. I have slowed sound clips down on Audcity and determined that the slowness of the tune was a detriment to the learn by ear process. I also look forward to the day when I can look back and smile at the early struggles. Nanohedron, “born lear...

Learning Tunes by Ear
I have been using both sheet music and the use of my ear to learn new tunes. I work at getting the basics of a tune down with the use of sheet music and some where short of tune memorization I then work the tune through without sheet music but listening to the tune being played. I do this to differe...
