Re: Provocation: Can you learn Flute in less than 5 years?
It seems like it takes about 1000 hours of practice to gain competency* in a musical instrument. So at an hour a day, six days a week (fingers need rest) it takes maybe four years (it takes time to work up to being able to practice an hour a day). That's assuming you have good instruction. Most peop...

Re: Timeline of Whistle Makers?
One detail is that the first Clarkes were all in C. It would be interesting to know when the first D whistles were made. I wonder if that is actually true. As far as I remember the book on Clarke history mentiones different keys at different points in the text. It also reproduces catalogue images f...

One detail is that the first Clarkes were all in C. It would be interesting to know when the first D whistles were made. I have my great grandfather's whistle. It looks kinda like the third from the left in the photo of Generations above, but the decorative lines are in different locations. It's sta...

Re: Carbony Uilleann Pipes
(I'm looking for good intonation, strong volume, sweet high notes, nimble action, good air-efficiency.) I take it from your signature that you've settled on the Goldie Low D. I listened to some youtube comparisons of it and others, including one with the Carbony. I can hear that it has a much clear...

Re: A few bagpipe questions
My understanding is that some of the MIDI wind controllers have programmable fingerings, the user can program in any fingering system desired. The problem I had when trying to play trad on a MIDI wind controller is they didn't have quick enough response time, so they would either ignore a gracenote...

Re: A few bagpipe questions
For those going down the MIDI route note that it can be just as obsessive as whistles, but more dangerous to the pocketbook. ;-) I've gone kind of off the deep end and got an Akai EWI, which is wind controller that allows you to play chromatically over 8 octaves. It also supports a lot of non-standa...

Re: Carbony Uilleann Pipes
The caveat is that I've played the various instruments at their booth at various points in time, and I know that some makers continuously upgrade their designs. The things that I've played most is their Low Whistles (easier to pick up a whistle and give a toot, than strap on pipes) and they at leas...

Re: What kind of preamp For sm7b
You have two factors to consider. Preamps basically break down between transparent and color. All transparent pres are alike. Probably no one can listen to one and tell you what it is. On the color side you have a few options but the 1073 is the most well known. Aside from that choice the main facto...

Re: Anyone familiar with digital pianos?
If you have the money get a Yamaha Clavinova. They start at about $2500. We've had a few music major type pianists play ours and they both thought it was good. It responds like a piano. If you gently depress a bass key and then strike a treble key, the bass will resonate.

I wore these at a concert the other day and they're much better than any other earplug I've tried:

Re: Practicing in a Resonant Space
A couple issues to be aware of. First, if your room resonates at a frequency that isn't a note it can encourage you to play out of tune. Second, clap your hands in the resonant room. If you hear an echo rising in pitch, that's flutter. It will encourage you to play flat. If you don't know what flutt...

Cool. Where did you get the tubing? Is that a Freeman Bb next to it?pancelticpiper wrote:

Re: Advice needed for a good all around Whistle
I agree with the suggestion for the Freeman tweeked Bb, especially since one of your criteria is "responsive."
I have a Carbony G that I play sometimes. I wins on the not shrill criteria, but the Bb is more responsive. Especially if you want to play fast things.

Re: Very basic editing of lesson and session recordings
Adobe Audition has great tools for this. You can select a region (usually you can do that visually), click the "add marker" button, give it a name (e.g.: Morrison's Jig). Repeat for all the regions you're interested in, including overlapping regions if you want. Then export all the regions...

I hadn’t thought of it like that. Makes perfect sense. Thanks!
